When I first started feeding her raw food I followed all the instructions in Ed's articles. My dog never left the food laying around. She couldn't wait to eat it. She would wolf in down as fast as possible. She loves a raw diet. Kibble, as you know, just doesn't put the sparkle it a dog's eyes as a raw diet does.
Please understand that I'm a big supporter of raw diet, and I tried everything I could to keep her on it, but it was the cause of the exploding diarrhea. I have to wait until I know what her real internal problem is, fix it, and then hopefully she'll be able to handle a raw diet again.
Constridium Parenthagen (sp) is a bacteria in the intestines. Diarrhea is a symptom of it. My dog had a very considerable growth when she was originally diagnosed. I'm sure future tests will show she still has it. Eventually, I want to do a blood test and allergy tests. I would love to do a full battery of tests on her and find out exactly what is wrong with her. Like I said before, she's been this way since I got her at 10 weeks old.
Even then she has the sickest case of round worm. 5 days after I bought her, two tons of them came pouring out of her on the living room floor. So she obviously wasn't taken very good care of by the pet store.
I feed her Dr. Wysong (maintenance diet). When she is not eating that then I also use Wellness. Both seem to be much easier on her stomach.
What I read last night on Constridium Parenthagen say that some strains cause permanent damage to the small intestine. Has your vet mentioned this?
Also an interesting note is that it is not necessarily killed by cooking meat. Perhaps there is a small amount in the kibble (any kibble) that keeps her bacteria colony active?
I assume you've tried, but just in case you haven't - do you add Probiotic powder or plain active yogurt to her diet?
It may be too late, but consisdering she had that problem at 10 wks old when you bought her, I would review the terms of sale of sales contract and consider legal action against the pet store to reclaim the dollar amount of vet bills related to this problem.
Yes, that is the same Dr. Wysong product that I have just started feeding her. She was getting bored of the Wellness kibble. The Wellness product I use is Wellness Fish & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food. She likes all the Welness stuff.
I tried the plain yogurt when I was giving her the medication (the name of the meds escapes me). Someone on this site told me to feed the plain yogurt to replace all the good bacteria that the meds would kill. Since I stopped giving the meds I have not used the plain yogurt. Should I continue with it, and if so, why?
I use Probios/yogurt pretty much all the time. I guess the theory is that if the gut is full of "good" bacteria, then there is less space for the "bad" bacteria to grow? (I feel really stupid because I don't have a better answer.) It won't do any harm and if there's a benefit - then great!
