Oh my God!!
Judy that's horrible, I'm so sorry.
Good for Gunnar, he's a brave little guy to have bounced back so quickly. Yikes though...
Maybe you should take a vacation (take Gunnar along) to try and relax a little after what happened.
Thanks for the safety reminder too. We all do things where "we should know better" so it's good to have such a sobering reminder every now and again.
Try to forgive yourself, I'm sure Gunnar has already

Like everyone else, I am also glad to hear he is okay. And I agree with Yuko, I bet Gunnar has already forgiven you.
Back when I was young and dumb, one of my labs fell out of my pick up at a slow speed and I felt completely horrible.
I use crates now and feel way better knowing that my dogs are a lot more secure if anything ever were to happen.
Chin up kiddo, everything turned out fine.

Well I'll just jump on the bandwagon since I'm reading this late -
Judy, I'm SO glad Gunnar is OK! Truly a scary thing, but you've learned the lesson, thankfully no worse for the wear, and Gunnar will be that much safer in the future, with you aware of this danger.
Oscar isn't allowed in the passenger part of my car - only the trunk (I have a hatchback and he fits neatly back there). There are no windows that open back there, so no jumping out, but I have thought about him barreling forward over the back seats if we were ever in an accident and I know that's a very real danger. Your story has inspired me to seek out one of those mesh dividers, like the ones people put between the back seat and trunk of station wagons... Thank you for posting your experience - it'll do us all good to re-consider how we travel with our dogs.
*Here's hoping you'll both fell 100 times better in the morning!

I have a station wagon and that's what I do too, though I've found that the mesh divider isn't nearly strong enough. I have one of the tubular metal ones and it's cranked on really tight, and that seems to do the trick. I prefer to have a crate in the car, but my dog's crate is too big to fit.
Judy, SO GLAD everything turned out alright!! You know, if we never made mistakes we wouldn't ever learn anything. Thank you for sharing what I'm sure was one of your more terrifying moments so that we may be spared the same.

I too am glad your dog is okay. My boss's son lost his pitbull out of the bed of his pickup driving 70 miles an hour down the road. He didn't know when it happened and figured the dog was dead. His mom (bosses wife) scoured miles of the side of the road where the son thought he had lost him. Found him over 24 hours later laying in a ditch. His tail wagged at her. His hip was broken. Vet said it was the pure muscle of the dog that helped it heal so you can't tell anythign had happened. Very lucky. At least you don't put your dog in the bed of a pickup. I don't know how other people here feel about that but the way i figure it - no matter how safe a driver you are or how smart your dog is there is still so much that could happen in the back of a pickup!!! Here in Idaho even more people put their kids back there!

I've seen people do that here too. I'm like "wtf are they thinking?" We 'supposedly' have a law here that no animals can be transported in open vehs, but I see them from time to time. You're right. So many bad things can happen. I'm glad you & your dog are alright Judy. I just got back from Mexico. It was a 1500 mile drive round trip and we took our dog with us. We have an SUV and as much as I wanted to have her loose for that long trip, I tethered her to the back half of the truck. I have another SUV with the tube divider and she always goes in there, no matter what. I'm glad I don't get 'soft' and let her run either truck.

Just want to chime in with what should be obvious - if you put your dog in a crate in the back of a pickup, please secure the crate so it doesn't go flying in event of an accident.
I once nearly dumped a passenger (person) out of a car at high speed on a freeway. Hit a divider, causing the car to swerve violently. She didn't have a seatbelt on and her door wasn't locked. She grabbed the door handle, which opened the door, and she wound up hanging out with her head a few inches off the pavement. Gave me nightmares for a long time. Judy, I'm so glad Gunnar is okay. Try to think of this as a good thing - you learned a lesson and have helped educate others, perhaps saving some lives.

Gunnar <<<<<big hug>>>>>
What a relief that Gunnar is OK. I'm sorry that happened to him and happened to you. But Gunnar is OK and I hope you can be OK soon too. I find myself more focused on you, Judy, at this point cause of the guilt, since Gunnar is fine.
For those of you who are now looking into car harnesses for their dogs, here's the one I bought, after having bought 2 others I didn't like: http://www.canineauto.com/champion.htm
The dog can turn around without getting caught up because of the design of the tether, and it can be tethered to the backseat seatbelt or to the tether anchors in the back of an SUV. Good strong harness, strong tether. The rings on the harness are heavy duty, as is the clasp on the tether. Good price.

Well, you all have been incredibly supportive and I want to thank you again for that.
The vet told me that today I may see signs of soreness, possibly limping. He seems to be perfectly OK (Thank You, God).
Kelly - what an awful story. That poor dog and owner . I know what you mean about the craziness of putting any living being in the back of a travelling pickup . I see it a lot when I visit AZ.
Natalya - thanks for posting that. It helps me to know that Gunnar's ordeal was not in vain.
