You're probably right, and it's nice to see it going back to the 1800s' as far as why white was desired, and you know I always thought that we use pyrennees' and breed like in Europe to stay with the sheeps( to protect the flock) BECAUSE they are white and can blend in with the sheeps, I have alwasy wondered why we used GSD that had such a color of the predators they were protecting the sheeps from, coyatoes, wolves, ect...I think both have reasons but I have always wondered why the stigma and how that came about...Thanks for the literature and explanation, I greatly appreciated it
Now if anyone ask me about white shepherds I know what to say....
Well ......... personally I think it is a gene pool thing - when you get to breeding for color you may not be focusing on other characteristics. You see more variation in the working lines because people are not focused on getting a certain "style"
I think a lot of folks (including Stephaniz, no?) thought that the color white was linked to faults associated with poor pigment which we now know not to be true. (Syrotouk in scent and the scenting dog was adamant about this)
My understanding was the GSDs as used in herding (and I realize the recent evolution of the breed) were used for tending herding and not as flock gaurdian dogs like the Pyrenees but rather all-purpose dogs which could transport the flock great distances (as opposed to gathering herding), and protect the handler and flock - so the dog would not be serving in the capacity of a live with the flock and guard the herd from wolves dog like the Pyrenees. I don't imagine wolves were really an issue when the breed was developed anyway.
not to mention the fact that very early in the breed development the dog was selected more for police servic work than herding sheep.

Well that's for sure, I have never understood people that breed for a specific color only.I think if you love the white shepherd but you breed it within mind that they are white BUT they can also work , that's a good thing. But I have to admit people that say they WANT a white shepherd always think they are soo rare and again so pretty, you don't hear often enough "I like the white shepherd but I like one that can work" At least it's been my experience with people calling me to ask me where they can find "white shepherds" when I ask why white, they say "oh cause they are so pretty"
Now how come we don't see many if any in the Schutzhund world?
Why?
