....Everytime you call them, they sit in front? And I assume you use it sparingly?..
I call the dogs many times a day and don't particularly want them to sit in front, or do a fast competition recall from one room to another every time I call them.
So I have formal and informal.
I too do the formal in two steps.

I was assuming a fast competition style recall,
Well, we are in the SchH Competition Obedience forum.
I assumed the same thing.

Mike I have a competition recall and it's very fast, my young male bandit at first no matter what distance he would slam in my knees, and so I made my recalls from a short distance to longer so that he would not knock me down in the process.I also have to assume that not all dogs are the same and not every recall is taught the same but I felt as if Alex was a bit confused from his post.So I always like to give the advise of "going back to the basics" type of advice when people are at a point that they are a bit lost.Makes sense?
I assume that Alex s' dog knows the come command, and that now he wants his dog to sit in front. That is why I said do it together. Not sperately.I feel too and this is by experience, your recall is what it is at a certain age of the dog, if a dog is fast,he'll stay fast and if he's slow he'll most likely stay slow, and sure you can always coax your dog to speed up but it is alwasy good to do it early in age.(and I am pointing out that AT a certain age of the dog)recalls are hard to change.
I always taught my recall from young puppy and it has been from when my young pup would be at a distance I would call him and run and little exercise like that but I was assuming that , Alex had his dog coming to him already but simply wanted to add the sit in front. That is when I feel all he needs to do is have his dog on a long line and recall and make his dog sit in front, you can walk a step into your dgo as you say sits when he comes, reward with food when the dog is in a sit and straight.
Wrong?

Our recall is way better now, but the way I taught it was to just run back to me. Now, I want her to recall and sit in front. What's the best way to do that? and do I still use only "come"? From what I'm thinking....I call her from near, with the long line and wait till she sits in the position I want her, reward and add distance to the recall again. Does that sound right?
Connie, I dont read Schtuzhund recall, or competition recall here!
Am I missing something??

Well, the O.P. is posting in the SchH Competition Obedience forum.
When I see that, it colors the post for me, and I assume he is talking about Competition Obedience.

Look up at the top of your screen (above the top post on your screen), or if you are looking at "Active Topics," each post also shows what forum the post is in.

Well there is always a first time ! I have never looked up that high on the page I still stand to my advise. It worked for me and my recalls are competion recalls.
When anyone is not getting what they want and they are stuck going back to the basics are best..
Like Alex said his dog come to him already , teaching his dog to sit in front, is very easy for a dog to learn. And with short distance first to long is best IMO
By the way Connie I knew better than make a comment llike that, I never noticed all that stuff all over the board, but then I challenge a Moderator, so smart of me

Yes, I'm with you 100% that going back to basics is the way to go.
For me, breaking the command down into steps and training each one separately before combining them works best.

You know guys, that was my mistake. Connie, I didn't see "schutzhund", only competition obd & basic obd. So since I want a fast recall w/sit in front. I didn't think basic obd was the right place, when it actually probably is .
As Angelique said, my dog knows "come" but it could always be a little faster and now I want to integrate sit in front. I'm going to go a few steps back and retrain that, before I do that, I just need to decide whether I want to have a formal and informal recall though .
I want my dog to be able to blaze back to me and sit in front with a recall, but then I also want to just be able to call her from one room to another as Connie said, for no big deal. I guess it's not so difficult. I just have to make up my mind on 1 recall or 2.
Btw, those of you who have a formal & informal recall, what are those commands you use for each? Just curious as to what to choose if I decide for that. Thanks for posting guys!
