Unconditional love does have its price.
Oh so true!
My GSD is now 26 months and is also on raw and has been for quite some time. He sheds, don't get me wrong, but whenever someone on the street says, "Oh my he must shed so much" or something to that effect, my answer is always, "Actually, it's not too bad at all".
So I'm guessing by my experience and all the other raw feeders who've posted prior to me, that raw does play a significant role in diminishing the fur found on the floor .

My shepherd also sheds A LOT, I have to vacuum constantly. I use a furminator, and it helps, but he still leaves a lot of hair behind. Ever since I did the switch to raw (December 06') I noticed that the shedding had reduced significally. My family also noticed that the dog wasn't shedding as much.
Shedding is simply something that we pet owners have to deal with, although some dogs shed less than others. When my mom sweeps the kitchen floor, she comments about the big hair balls that bundle up...but she still loves him to death.

Well I was tricked! (by myself ) Before I got my dog I was also considering a Rottie, or GSD. There was a 3-way tie, but I chose the Boxer because of "less shedding" since it's a short coat. Yeah right! You should see my rugs (home & car), carpet, floors when I sweep & CLOTHES. She sheds A LOT! We'll see how she does on raw .

Yes, carpool. My daughter's friend are horrified by my car most days because they do not have pets.
I could spend hours plucking at my two GSD's fur (outside of course) but I use a few different brushes and deal with the rest. A vet I used to go to said his wife would never let him have a GSD because of the shedding! I thought that was funny.
We are considering a dyson-if the cost would just come down.

One of the things I do to cut down on the hair is that I vacuum my dog. I take the attachment off and put the nozzle/hose portion right on him and run it up and down his back, shoulders and hind legs.
I've done this since he was a puppy so he sits still for it and actually enjoys it. It is a stress-free, enjoyable few moments for him. During spring and summer I find if I do this every day to every other day, along w/brushing him, I seem to have less of a problem with the shedding.

I used the vacuum on my dogs also (3 collies, a Keeshond and GSD/MalamuteX).

I have to agree with the correlation between feeding a raw diet and reduced shedding.
My previous dog was a GSD mix on a commercial kibble diet and shed 24/7. My current GSD is fed raw and sheds remarkably little. She does however blow her coat in Spring and Fall with substantial shedding at those times for several weeks.
I should add I do brush her almost daily for 5-10 minutes with a pin-type brush.
Judy -- I wish I could use the vacuum on my dog. But the vacuum is an evil-doer in my household that needs to be admonished...in my dogs eyes.

My GSD is 16 months old. We've had him for 14 of those months. My observation is that he sheds once a year, for 365 days.
