I'm new to this forum and ran across this topic and figured I'd share some of my videos. I have an American bulldog who loves playing with his spring pole. Dogs with high prey drive and especially dogs who love to tug are very good candidates for spring pole use. My dog loves to jump up, grab the rope and let it spring out of his mouth and then jump after it. He also loves to hang from it and he really likes it when I push him like a kid on a swing.
I think any dog who likes to tug can enjoy a spring pole. But all dogs are different, some dogs will like to jump and hang or swing and some might like it better closer to the ground where they can tug at it with all feet or maybe just their rear paws on the ground.

Cool....Nice dog by the way....and WELCOME to the forum.
If you go into the Member Bio section and post a bio of yourself and a couple pics (we are allowed two images, but you can post all the direct links you want after that) it would be greatly appreciated.

Do they not hurt themselves thrashing around like that? I want to get one for Max but hubby is not so kean.
How do you teach them that they can jump and grap the toy but not anything that you might have in your hand that looks similar?

Welcome! That's a big, beautiful boy you have there. I've got to figure out how to design a springpole for my 18 month old bullmastiff mix; don't have a big tree handy. I know she'd love it...

No, not usually do they injure themselves. It can happen though. What I noticed is that he is teaching the dog as he grows how to jump, lock and hang.
He does not allow the dog to do it on his own until the older videos. Which is good. Injuries happen when you allow the dog to be beserk without guiding and teaching them how to do it. (from what I have researched and read from other threads)
I think as far as teaching them not to try it with something that is in your hands is a training and leadership issue.
My older dogs know that anything I am holding is not theirs until I offer it. The younger dogs need to learn it. Most of the time I have no issues, but at times, especially when they are pumped up they will try and grab.
A firm, "Nay" and then redirect works well for me.

Carol is right, He knows not to try and take anything from my hands because I've taught him not to. He also knows the difference between bathroom time, training time, spring pole time, etc.. I can't have him trying to go after his spring pole when we're working on something else.
As far as teaching him how to play with his spring pole it is gradual and in steps. First tug-a-war with me. When he knows what that means (as far as tugging, good grip, and to let go or stop on command), I hang the bite rag or rope from the spring and encourage him to go after it (all feet on the ground to start). Then it's just a matter of raising it little by little over a couple of weeks until his rear paws are barely touching the ground. At this point I just grab the rope and push outward until his feet are off the ground (like in the video). Then it's just a matter of raising it a little more and encouraging him to jump up for it...
Good luck if you do decide to get your dog on one...

Thank you Lynne... You can attach a spring pole to the side of a wall using some type of support that sticks out or you could get some 4x4s and construct something that's kind of like an upside down L with a support beam and put it into the ground and attach it to that. You just need to make sure it will hold your dog. A special note: if you construct the spring pole yourself, make sure the spring or springs are strong enough to hold a little more than your dogs weight. You don't want it to snap while he/she is on it (lesson learned). Toro has broken two spring poles. But he didn't care, he just trotted off with the rope he won from the big tree. But a spring pole breaking in the middle of a tugging session might turn some dogs off to it. If you really want to make one I'll take some pictures of mine and all the pieces, you can pick them up at the local hardware store (easy to make).
