Well, he is doing better. When I got home, his nub was going crazy and he wasn't so skittish. I took him for a walk again and with a cpl mild leash pops, he was walking nicely (I am using a martingale collar on him). On our break at the park, he was burning off all his energy and when I'd call him, he ran happilly to me He is starting to mind me now. My brother came over and he warmed up to him too. Looks like he's settling in....EXCEPT...
Last night was another sleepless night . 11 pm, I put both crates in the living room and then the crying, whining and barking started. My dog loves her crate, but an hour after, I had TWO upset dogs. At 12 am, I pulled my dog from her crate and let her sleep in our room on her dog bed where she usually sleeps. I didn't want 2 stressed dogs. At 2 am the other dog was still barking, so I moved him to the garage. Finally at 3 am for the sake of everyone in the house I gave in. I went to get him, and we both slept in the guest room. I tethered him to the bedpost and in 10 mins he was asleep. All the treats I tossed in his crate where still there. These were high value treats, grilled chicken & steak. I think he is terrified of that crate (understandable). I need to come up w/a solution for this if he is to be adopted. I don't know how many people are educated enough to handle this the right way, or not be violent to him. I'm thinking of buying him a wire crate vs his airline crate and re-teach him this crate is not bad. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I was adament about not giving in to his crying, but I figured I had more time to work w/him this wknd, when I don't have to work.
I think a prong collar is a good idea. You don't have to use it for corrections, so don't snap the leash or anything. I've found that the dog will self correct when they start to tug on the leash. They will ease off on their own when they feel the collar tighten around their neck.
Can the new dog's crate be near your bed for now, and slowly moving away?
I was thinking of doing that Connie. I didn't really want 2 dogs sleeping in my room, but if it will help him.... I may have to crate my dog to make room though, hopefully by this weekend I figure something out. Thanks
