I really don't eat much meat myself (occasionally some bird or fish), for many reasons BUT
So anyone who decides to feed a carnivore a vegetarian diet is an IDIOT. There's really no PC way to put this
I'm sorry, but if one doesn't want to feed meat to their pet, get a pet rabbit.

Actually, taurine is only considered to be essential for cats (and other strict carnivores).
That is technically correct. It's an amino acid that can be synthesized from other amino acids.
It has not yet been classified as essential to dogs, despite the 2005 and 2006 research that showed that a large percentage of dogs (almost 40% in dogs who were fed the diet for over 5 years) fed a vegetarian diet from which taurine was withheld developed heart disease, especially dilated cardiomyopathy. Several died.
Dogs may be opportunistic omnivores who can survive on a lot of different foods, but they have the digestive system, the skull and jaw, and the teeth of a carnivore. They are designed to eat meat, and they cannot thrive without it.
And this recent research indicates that they also don't have a normal life span without it.

My understanding is that the heart is a really good source of taurine...maybe the best?...so I've tried to make sure my dog gets beef heart weekly for that reason. Is this correct?

I promise I'm not being a smart arse, but get your friend to look at the dogs teeth (aka meat grinder) Besides the helpful people on this board, that is one of the main reasons I wanted to make the switch. There is NO denying what those teeth are made for.

Since taurine synthesis occurs mainly in the liver, that might be the richest source. I don't think it matters for dogs. I think that if they get meat and, even better, organ meat, then they are getting sufficient taurine.

Right. Those teeth are designed to rip and tear chunks of meat. Herbivores' teeth are completely different.

Right on! You know, my boyfriend is vegan, and I eat mostly vegan and vegetarian as well, but our freezer is filled exclusively with MEAT - because Oscar ISN'T! Ian is actually happy to do all the chopping and handling of raw this or that (OK, he draws the line at beef kidney, but I don't blame him  ) because, while WE don't eat much in the way of animals, we both have a healthy respect for nature's designs and it's pretty obvious that our dog was not meant to sip smoothies and munch on celery stalks. It's been incredibly educational to learn about what our dog SHOULD be eating, as we switched to raw over a year ago, and I agree completely with Yuko, if you don't want to feed your pet meat, don't have a DOG as a pet!
*I actually don't think the reason for this discussion had a political slant - OP's dog in question had health issues that were thought to originate with a meat based diet (??!!) - but I had to speak up because IMO a vegetarian diet for a dog, for whatever the cause, IS stupid.
