Martina, Thank you for providing such a detailed account, especially considering you are injured. I am now more shocked than I was after seeing the video. Unbelievably tragic. The contestants were put in a very difficult position and I can completely understand what a great honor and responsibility it would be to represent your country at this event. I am sure it was difficult to believe even seeing it first hand. I am so sorry for the injured dogs. I know their handlers/owners must be devastated.
Martina,
I hope you are right about the dog not having a pre-existing condition because if it were me and my dog it would just kill me to know that I allowed my dog to compete and something like that happened to him. I would blame myself for real bad judgment.
Martina, When you say that the rules "Do Not Allow It" as far as pulling out of the Trial, this to me seems pretty ridiculous as far as rules are concerned. If I was at a trial like that with a dog that I worked very hard on getting him there, then No Way.
I think that the prestige of this event blinded the handlers and their ego of having their dogs win it. Knowing there was a good chance they could be hurt as the ones before them. One dog was euthanized as a result of the injuries and one had career ending injuries? That's a No-Brainer. Obviously they put pressure on the handlers to keep their dogs their, Or else.
I would not care what their rules said or if they said that I would be banned, blah, blah, blah. That is pure Garbage. It is my dog and I will do what is best.
Please show me reference to official rules that state you cannot pull your dog out of trial? Or show me the penalty for doing so? Because this was an issue discussed on another forum I was reading and the conclusion was drawn that there are no rules about pulling a dog out of a trial other than the notation on your scorebook?
Even with the rules, I'd still pull my dog if in a situation like that.
Afterwards, I'd make an offical complaint about the decoying and the judge for allowing the trial to continue with substandard helper work.
And believe me - I would not let it rest. I'd have no problem pushing the episode into the lime light.
The helpers reminded me of my 16 year old son when he catches, not sure of himself or what he is doing, and my son does not catch any dogs from a distance simply hold and bark and gives a bite, he's a true beginner and will attend a seminar in February but the helpers face in that video looked very unsure to me..
I almost feel sorry for both the helpers and the handlers, if these helpers had bad teaching themselves and were made to believe they are good , they think they can do the job but in reality are not good at it ....Whos' to blame in all of that? I think the ones who put the competition together and agreed to use these helpers that look green to me should be looked at..
I can sum this up with one word, wow.
Horrible, you would think that after 1-2 dogs injured that they would find a different helper or handlers would pull their dogs no matter what. Especially with the possiblity of a career ending injury. Stupid people never cease to amaze me.
