I used Frontline on my Cat for the last 9 years, and we never had a problem with Fleas or Ticks, so I have gone with Frontline for our Pup. Fleas & Ticks both are problems around here, so I'm hoping that Frontline is just as reliable for the Pup as it had been for the Cat.
Good Luck with your treatment.

I'm sorry to hear about it. Thanks for giving us a heads up about the ticks.
Not too long ago, I found one crawling around my lower back, it scared the daylights out of me! I caught it on time, it still hadn't attached to me. After that, I immediately went to the restroom, and stripped myself down to look for more. I didn't see any more ticks.
My dog and I went for a walk out in the wilderness that day, and I wasn't thinking about ticks. After looking through my clothes, and myself, I did very thorough check on my dog, couldn't find any. Checked him about 3 times that day, nothing. I guess we must have gotten lucky or something.
Ever since then, I've been really careful about where we walk. I avoid grassy areas, use spray repellent on my clothes and I also stop every once in a while to visually check.

I just spoke to my vet because I have been finding ticks even though I use Revolution. Revolution is primarily for heart worm, but also is supposed to prevent fleas & ticks. I'm heading down to my vets office to pick up Frontline Spray tick repellent which can be used along with Revolution. The other good thing I just got via mail order is the Preventic collar. My vet said those are great, but I'd rather not use a tick collar if I don't have to, so I'm going to try the spray first.

Michele,
Sorry to hear about that. The line of work I do keeps me in the woods on most days so I am all too familiar with ticks. I've worked with a couple of people who have gotten Lymes disease but like you, they were diagnosed early on. Fotunately they took the antibiotics and have never had a problem.
As a preventative measure, I use a product called Permenone, the active ingredient is permethrin) and i spray it on my pants and let it dry overnight. It works pretty good as I've seen ticks jump off my pants after climbing halfway up my leg and found dead ticks stuck to my pants from prolonged contact with chemical in the repellent. It lasts for a copy of weeks befroe you need to re-apply it. You can get this at Walmart or anywhere they sell camping equipment. Another good thing is to get boots atleast 8 inches tall and tuck your pants into them to prevent ticks from climbing up under your pants.

Michele, now that you have had this experience, would you do anything differently? Do you vaccinate your dog for lyme? What are peoples experience here with things like Frontline for actually preventing it?
Jennifer
Next time I personally go out in the wilderness, will *definately* wear a hat and light clothing, long sleeves and a repellant. (um, just like I learned to do in grade school ) I did learn that you can get lyme again and again, so, will definately take the precautions necessary. Looking back, I just wish I would have found some mushrooms that day to at least have made it all worth it!!!
As for my dog, do not vaccinate and will not. I've gone 20 years with dogs in the woods using only Frontline and no dogs with Lyme, no ticks. Amber brought up a good point, different dogs, different stuff works, just like people. My plan is to take heed and carry on!!!
Oh, and thanks Elliott for the mention of the permemone stuff. I do try to steer clear of DEET stuff, stay "all natural" but will surely look into the myriad of products.

Michelle: Thanks for bringing up hats too. I forgot the little boogers not only grab on form the ground but drop from branches too. I hope your recovery is speedy & without incident.

Susan,
I was using Revolution on my older shepherd and she was recently diagnosed (this past year) with lyme disease. Just to let you know : ) My vet said lyme disease is showing up in more of his patients recently and these are all just city dwelling dogs in Philadelphia that only go to small parks (1 block by 1 block).

Oh boy, that's what I'm afraid of. I'm thinking I better take my dog in and have him tested for any tick born diseases.

Sandy,
I had thought that Revolution worked for all ticks, but if you go on their website it only mentions the american dog tick. If you are looking for a complete tick preventative Revolution is not the way to go. Now I use Frontline Plus and it seems to work ok, I can't use K9 Advantix because I own cats, but I would really like to have tried this product.
