It helped me understand a little about my Yellow Labrador's behavior. Maybe it isn't just that he seems deaf as a doornail. If you read the book you'll know what I mean
I have an autistic nephew, so to Kelly, you are a saint to work with disabled people.
Jennifer, you were posting at the same time I did. I found your post interesting and funny.
I wonder too if your dog is so well taken care of his instincts aren't creating his need to seek out food, mark territory. He must know he has a secure pack (pack leader)and follows your lead- not those other pesky dogs.
I hope that came across as a compliment, because that is how it was meant.
The mimicking others is called allelomimetic. This has been observed in animals for years. Watch the birds fly sometime in a flock. When one turns they all turn.
Jennifer I had to laugh - when I read your #1 I thought "maybe it is because she doesn't see you eating out of the garbage".
I have a tall lab/grayhound mix that could also easily jump the fence. My two PB mixes have the "climb the chainlink" gene and I am so happy she has never learned that.
Maybe your dog isn't dumb - maybe you have been a good trainer and rewarded him for all the right things . Or maybe he is smarter than you think and just jumps the fence real quitely, puts on a disguise and goes to the butcher and back with the cat in on the deal as a lookout.
What can I say - I'm from a Gary Larsen world ....

Michael - I saw on a PBS show once where lions in the wild would start yawning after the people watching them started yawning. Probably not the same thing but . . .
I think it is fascinating how dogs and animals can take cues from us. One of the things that makes dog training so rewarding.
