Man.. we have to worry about bears and moose while walking trails here.
I haven't done it yet, and won't until I get some sort of mace and a bell.
Most dogs I've seen have been pretty well contained or leashed..So they're not my biggest worry when I take my dog on short walks.
Though, there was some sort of small terrier that wanted a piece of my pup.. My dobe stayed by me, trying to get as far from the screeching dog on the other side of the road as possible, and the lady gave ME a nasty look.
Just came back from a walk..no encounters this time...phew! Yes, we have a couple of those protective mutts out in the country, too! My older sister lives in the country, and that's my "get-away" route from all these neighborhood dogs. Unfortunately, my schedule doesn't allow me to drive over there very often, at least not until late afternoon/weekends.
On one occasion, while walking in the country, I bumped into a wolf-hybrid! You should have seen the paws on that dog, they were HUGE! That dog's weight must have been 100 and something pounds. He looks pretty old, and stays in one particular area, doesn't wander off. Seems like someone dumped him there...wonder why, hmmmmm. Beautiful looking dog though.
I would carry a big stick or some other long heavy object, mace, pepper spray, of bear spray when going for a walk with your dog. Or plan on kicking/defending/protecting your dog if attacked by an unknown/aggressive dog. I've had to kick(or kick at) a few dogs that didn't listen when I yelled at them to go away and the owner was nearby not watching their dog.
