I know Susan, but the way he acted the last time I talked to him he didn't care to listen to one word, which is why I told him no BS. It was not confrontational at all, but the little I know about responsible breeding, the questions I asked him, I felt like I was talking to a brick wall. Believe me if there was any way I could teach him to see it from my point of view, I would much rather have that.
I talked to animal control and they said if his dogs don't have at least the minimum rabies and licensing requirements, and the mother is in bad shape, they will take a look. Here is a link to info on A/C in his area.
These types of situations are so frustrating. Dogs aren't cash factories, most responsible breeders I've spoken with and read about tell you that with the vet exams, cost of care and maintenance, you won't even break even on a litter of registered purebred puppies, much less make any profit from it.
The girl I drove around had a male "pit mix" that she wanted to breed because if he had "pure brindle" puppies, they'd sell for $500 apiece. She had no idea what she would be getting into, and got rid of both dogs she had because she could barely care for one.
I wish you the best of luck in negotiating with your relative.
