I'd leave the class - but then again, I'm biased, because that's exactly the sitation I'm in right now. If you don't leave, just remember, it's your dog, and you're the one to decide how that dog is trained. Be firm about your limits.
I made the mistake of caving in under pressure instead of standing my ground, and things got so out of hand that there was quite a scene and I quit the class. I'm going to wait until Jenga's a little more grown up and get into an obedience class that's a little more formal than the zoo I was in.
Thanks guys for your thoughtful comments. I appreciate them.. We can learn so much from eachother here.. This forum is great... Anyway... So I think I'm going to take the advice and stick to my guns and politely decline the puppy play time and the calm technique... Thanks for reenforcing my gut feeling about this.. I don't know how mad I would be if someone messed my pups temperment up.. It's such a responsibility to raise a dog.. I never realized it.. But I have to admit I am enjoying it. And it will be well worth it when I have a well socialized, courtious dog that I can take anywhere with me.... Wouldnt it be nice if all dog owners took the responsiblity of raising an animal as seriously as some on this board do? I bet the occurance of animal attacks would decrease greatly... I just read this morning an owner of a chow mix was mauled and killed. The article said the animal was chained out back and the owner was taking treats to it... Umm what a tragedy... Well thats it for now... Thx again..
I guess I'm the only one that doesn't have a problem with a supervised puppy play period. My puppy is 9 weeks old now and I specifically take him to a play period. He starts to bark when he sees the other puppies and then it's a free for all. I am all for puppies being allowed to frolic together - I feel it really helps in how they view other dogs later in life.
My dogs have all learned to mind their own business and ignore other dogs after they went to dog school. I don't do dog parks, but my friends will bring their dogs over to play. I never let my dogs or puppy visit with strange dogs or puppies when we are out in public - who knows what those strange dogs are going to do and who knows what disease or parasites they might have - and I don't want my dogs to learn it's play time any time they see another dog.
I have seen puppy classes where the puppy was passed from person to person and that's something I wouldn't do and I would never let an instructor discipline my puppy in any way.
