It all stems from not being there to correct right here right now when a offence happens. The dog just then thinks his/her behaviour is ok as it has never been corrected.
Are you trying to eliminate the barking all together? I personally think that being heavy on the corrections is something that would be used to eliminate the behavior all together (like the hole digging) but could cause problems if you only want to modify it (like alert barking that you want to be able to stop on command, but not eliminate all together) especially in a soft or handler-submissive dog.
No no I'm just trying to prevent problem barking same as the original poster.
We had a visit from bylaw last month

We've had reports of your dog barking day and night ... blah blah etc..consider yourself warned.
As my wife would just put the dog in the backyard or kennel and NOT supervise it when I was at work.
I see to many people are of the school of yelling at the dog out of frustration from a window etc, instead of finding solutions to modify or correct unwanted behaviours.
She was barking at the 2 neighbours all the time nonstop, whenever they stepped into their backyards. I bought a big box of milk bones and gave the neighbours a bunch. Now they give her one or 2 treats under my supervision so she associates them with something good. She still alert barks but once she sees who it is, the tail starts to wag. If it was a stranger she still would go ape and that is a good thing.
Great point about the exercise too! Though having a Mal the only thing I've seen poop her out fast is herding Sheep. To bad I couldn't keep sheep in the city!

I see that all the time, too. Kudos for not being one of those people!
