Perhaps they do meet the letter of the law but not the spirit. Only a glutton for punishment would show up at a schutzhund trial with a choke chain on a competition dog!!!! I just went & looked at the rules & I read exactly what Will said & agree that it's subject to interpretation. We all know fur savers are acceptable. Why would someone want to get off on the wrong foot with the judge right from the get go?
What??? So everyone that trials with a choker is a glutton for punishment? or a masochist like you previously posted?? You're a sharp cookie, aren't you? No one with a brain OR heart could possibly trial with a choker, huh? Nice. Thanks for your post.

Also straight from the DVG: http://www.dvgamerica.com/rules.html
Click on 2004 BH rules in the right hand column. Page 2, first paragraph under On Lead heeling: ".....an animal rights approved collar or harness..."
I understand what you are saying & to some this might just sound like splitting hairs, but better to be safe than sorry! Stick with a fur saver.
Did you forget your sense of humor? The reason I said masochist/glutton for punishment is the traditional collar in schutzhund is a fur saver. But you know what, go on with your bad self & use a choke chain. I don't really care what you use, I wasn't even talking to you in the first place.
I do want to be sure those who need the correct information have it. Oh no need to thank me Chris. Have a nice day.

I always get such a visual when I hear "butt load" :-)I love that expression.
I saw the animal rights approved reference but still didn't know what the heck that was. I'll go ahead and stick with a fur saver just to be safe. Thanks again everyone.

butt (unit)
The butt (from the medieval French and Italian botte) or pipe is an old English unit of wine casks, holding two hogsheads (about (477 litres). A hogshead varied in size but today is most commonly 63 US gallons (ca. 238.5 litres), so a butt is now usually 126 US gallons or 105 imperial gallons.
So, when folks talk about a butt load, I'm guessing there's a lot of liquid around!
“A bunghole is a hole bored in a liquid-tight barrel. The hole is capped with a large cork-like object called a bung.” - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bung_hole
Just looking at the fur saver I assume that it does not "pinch" in the same focused spot that a choke chain does. I just watched the Basic Obedience DVD again last night. Also I assume less links = less places to catch and tear out the fur.
QUOTE: German fur saver collars are designed to replace normal choke collars. Their purpose is to help eliminate the choke collar wearing and breaking down neck hair. END
