Maybe if being polite doesn't work, I'll spray determined dog-pester-ers with a water bottle and shout "NO. BAD HUMAN. LEAVE IT."
LOL!!!
That's my favourite...
All these stories are downright astonishing to me. Do so many people actually harass your dogs when you say NO to their face??
Unbelievable. I'm glad people around here have more courtesy. They will often try to pet/grab my dogs without asking, but so far no one has ever persisted AFTER I tell them no.
You could always ask to pet their spouce in return, then ask how it feels when they start to dial the looney bin pick up hotline. I use the "training" line too and it has worked for me 100% of the time. So far the only down side has been that some people linger to watch, so I winde up going through some 2 or 3 minute fake routine.
I like the sound of the water bottle too. You got my one giggle quota for the day!!
On a day like today, where my pup has been whiney... I finally gave in and took him out for a potty break. Well he didn't have to go. While we were out I would make sure that he didn't approach anyone (no socializing, this was a potty break, not a play date) ... on my way back into my store, a young couple was walking by, and reached out to pet him. I stated No, please don't touch him ... and they just looked at me like I was Crazy.
Since I didn't want to give them or the pup to defy me, I just walked into my store.
What is sad, is that we shouldn't have to explain ourselves to anyone!

I HATE these people. Just once I wish I had the guts to say "Sure, pet my dog but ME first", then start squeeling and run over to their children & start patting their little brats!

Edit reason: screwed up the quote
You made me realize something I've been doing wrong Louanne...playing with the pup on potty breaks!
I was at the park today and my Golden had wanted to lie down below some shrubbery. I just stood there for a couple minutes comptenplating on random things and when I had looked back down I noticed he was asleep. :P I didn't bug him, instead I laid down with him. I got a few strange looks from people and one lady even seemed to hold her little girl back (The little girl apparently wanted to see the puppy). Strange a persons reaction...I thought it normal to lay down with a friend but apparently it isn't.
Oh well, I'm a bit on a the strange side anyways (In a good way, of course).
LOL. I know what you mean. You should've seen the looks on peoples faces when I was training my dog for the separation exercise for her CGC. I'd tie her to a bench, table, etc at the park, then walk behind a tree or bush & hide for 2-3 mins. People would like at me like I was crazy!!
Alex that is so funny
I also like to run when my dogs are looking down and not looking my direction I start running the other way, after a while of doing that to them they catch on quick they don't even want to sniff the ground, their eyes are glued to me ....When I did that exercise once I was running to the end of a park (enclosed, actually a school)and it looked like I was running from a pack of 3 shepherds to a woman on the other side of the park where I was heading to.She looked like she did not know rather she should start running or offer help. My dogs caught up to me and I stopped before I got close to the fence where she was on the other side.she said: "oh my goodness i thought they were chasing you" I replied: "they were, but they're mine"
Hah! Awesome. Thats a great idea Angelique, I'll put it to the test. By the way, the brown GSD in your signature looks a little out of place...is he the goofy one of the pack?
