We brought our pup home when he was 9 1/2 weeks old. By the time he was 12 weeks old he had learned come, sit, down, and crate, all using food for motivation and no corrections. Sometimes, if he was trying to figure out what we wanted, he'd go through his entire repertoire, which was quite entertaining. There is a term for that, can't remember what it is. Anyway, all that was taught with food as motivation and an attitude of fun and games. We didn't worry about heeling until much later.
It is so hard with a new puppy, you see them grow so fast and you want to take them from A to Z as quickly as you can. The advice I got from this forum, and it was very good advice, was to take my time. So take your time and enjoy your puppy.
I have an assortment of crates, so I have one crate in my bedroom, one in my kitchen and one at my office. He is comfortable in each of these crates, in their respective locations. He has since outgrown it, but he also had a crate in my van, too. :-) Now he is crate free in the vehicle, but he does get tied in.
I'm sure that wherever the crate is, your pup will be comfortable. They don't have to sleep in your bedroom, unless that is where you want the pup.
