Carol
Also i'm right there when i have the hatch open. All the kids and poeple like to come up and play with him. He goes to the schools here and goes in the jungle gyms and plays with all the children. He is a 1 1/2yr.old outstanding GSD. He is just a dumbass when i'm driving and when i'm parked. His mother and father and his line is one of the best. And are at the top of most of the PD1 K9 trials in the USA and in EUROPE. He is a great dog but when i'm driving he is a knothead.
Thank You JERRY

Jerry,
Can you clarify? Is he going crazy acting territorial or is he barking and spinning with excitement approaching a place he associates with good times? Also, is he a working police dog or your personal dog from police lines? One other thing is he free roaming in the SUV(STOP IMMEDIATELY) or do you have him secured?

Hi Jerry,
Some friendly advice....When you make comments such as "His mother and father and his line is one of the best", then sooner or later someone on this board is going to call you on it. Surprised it hasn't happened yet. Even though the members here are extremely friendly and helpful...you are in a "No BS Zone here".
Are you a handler?, and is this dog currently a working PSD? If so, then you have an unwanted behavour problem that specifically needs addressed. Until we know exactly what venue you and this dog are in, only then can we help you with your problem.

IMO, I would crate this dog and not let him have the run of the back of the vehicle. It is safer for you as the driver, the dog, and people who walk by your rig.
Also, just my opinion, but if he is an LE K9, why are you allowing people to approach your unit and pet him?
I guess I am quoting my own post, because one of my questions and my comment on the crate still stand....
The only reason I ask about people approaching your vehicle/unit, to pet the dog, is not something I see practiced a lot with LE K9's, regardless of disciplines they are trained for or how friendly they are.
All of my dogs are SAR dogs and their vehicle/crate is their space and I respect that and I also make sure others respect that. Being eye (face level even) level with a LE K9 in the back of a patrol vehicle is not a good situation. If the dog decided to act the way he acts with the hatch closed, it could very well be disasterous for whomever is reaching out to pet the dog or sticking their face in to "see" the dog.
I did not mean anything other than that. Your original post was a bit unclear on just what your position and the dogs position actually was.
I am interested to know who the sire and dam are as well. Learning good bloodlines is fun for me. Although I lean more towards a good Malinois than a GSD, it is still good to know lineage.

Jerry… Tell us a little about your program. Are you a new handler? Is the program new to your department?
Our department doesn’t allow any civilian touching of the dog… there is just entirely too much liability and possibility of someone getting bit. You can socialize the heck out of your dog without having civilians pet it. There are some great articles on Ed’s site and threads on the forums regarding various “training reasons” for not letting people pet your dog.
As for the car kennel behavior.. In the 13 years I’ve bee on the job, I’ve seen very few dogs that didn’t have different types of car issues. Some get wound up when they hear the siren kick on.. some are extremely vocal when they are alone in the car. Understand that the car kennel becomes another den to the dog.
There are many threads on teaching your dog a “quiet command” for in the car, take a look at those for a start. Depending on your level of expertise with the e-collar I’d hold off on that for a while and try other avenues first for this specific issue.

Hi Sheila
I think you might be right about a place he associates. He is contain and not free roaming. I'll tell you one thing i wish i never ask for any help.People think either my dog has bad lines, or what kind of handler i'm? Or is he a psd? HE IS!! Or being told how this is a no BS zone by The EXPERT howard knauk??? All i did is ask a QUESTION to get some answers to why i was having a problem.I thought i would just ask what people thought here. I'll just stick with POLICE K9 HANDLERS THAT ARE VERY WELL KNOWN.
THANK YOU

I still cannot see on any post that you have the dog in a car crate when travelling. If not it is dangerous even if you have a wire partition between yourself and the dog, Over here you would be pu;;ed over and given a warning to take it home and buy a travelling crate, and rightfully so, and this applies to any breed of Dog

Okay, I apologize, but I am going to go there.....
NO ONE on this thread said your dog had bad lines....this is a WORKING DOG forum so of course we would be INTERESTED in bloodlines since you had mentioned that they were the BEST!
WE asked YOU questions to CLARIFY questions we had so that we could offer you HELP AND ADVICE....
We are all VERY SERIOUS and DEDICATED on this board. I am not an EXPERT by any means, but that is why I am a member.....to ASK questions and take ADVICE and even CRITICISM because it helps me be a BETTER handler.
SO, disregard anything I asked or commented on, I'll not post any more to you.
AND just who the HELL is Howard Knauk??????? GEESH!!!!
One more thing,
I have a k9 GS police dog and a ford explorer that he rides in. When the back hatch is open you can walk up and pet him he is that friendly. When the hatch is down or when i'm driving he goes nuts if he sees another dog, cow, horse or person. If i drive by a place where i have stopped before like the fire dept. He starts going nuts.Like barking and spinning around in my unit. How do i settle him down? Maybe with a E-Collar
Thanks JERRY
AND
Also i'm right there when i have the hatch open. All the kids and poeple like to come up and play with him.
Those were your own words and it sounded like people went up to his "unit" to play with him.........your own words confused me, at least, so I wanted to CLARIFY!!!!
