I've found Bio Spot to be completely ineffective, I use Frontline and it works great. I've never used Advantix, so have no opinion on it.
I have peppermint and spearment plants in my yard. I have found when the gnats and biting flies are bad, if I pick a large handful of leaves from either plant (peppermint seems to work a little better) and crush them in my hands, and then rub the crushed leaves on my dogs, it keeps the flying biters away for several hours.
Here's a link to an herbal tick repellant. I have not tried it, but it sounds good.

Here's another one for fleas and ticks:

Advantix (NOT Advantage) repels mosquitoes as well as fleas and ticks, so that's the one I use. No reason to risk lyme disease from mosquitoes if Advantix does the job, and of course if there's no reaction to Advantix. I've used Frontline in the past, but it doesn't repel mosquitoes.

Not to hijack, but Sandy, have you any more information on mosquitos transmitting Lymes specifically? There were speculation/theories last I knew about MOSQUITOS transmitting lymes, but these were squelched by my doctor. He said there was a remote possiblity, but said something about the mosquito not being the right host to carry and transmit lymes...??? Just curious if there has been confirmed research that you know of on this topic...

Thanks Janice for the links.
Sandy,
That is interesting about the Lyme/mosquito connection, I had never heard that before. In this neck of the woods I've been told the carrier of Lyme is the Deer tick and mosquitoes are responsible for heartworms. In addition to the monthly application of Frontline I also use Heartguard. I don't like all these chemicals, if I switched to Advantix would that protect him from all three; fleas, ticks and heartworms? Does anyone know if ingredient wise that would have less health risks than the combination of Frontline and Heartguard?

Do you think the peppermint trick would work on deer flies?? They bite her sooooo bad and nothing seems to work.

Ditto!! Thanks Janice! We have fresh mint growing locally in the wild areas where we go for runs - I will try to grab some and give this a try the next time we're out - Oscar gets horse and deer fly bites very badly on his face - usually a couple right between the eyes!
I'm also curious about the Lyme/mosquito connection, as I thought ticks were the primary carriers for this disease...?

OH GOSH!!! My mistake!! Mosquitoes don't transmit lyme disease...you're right, that's carried by ticks. Sorry guys!
I think mosquitoes transmit West Nile Virus, but I think only to horses and people, not dogs. Don't know what I was thinking, but sure got it all turned around.
Even after 4 cups of coffee....thought I felt a little fuzzy.

I use Bio Spot on all of my dogs over 12 weeks, young pups get Advantix at 8 weeks, then it's Bio-Spot after that. I have had problems with dogs given Advantage and Frontlne, have had serious allergic reaction to both. Also, living in FL, and mosquitoes bing the paisn that they are, I needed a product that would repel them as well.

One thing you have to be careful with with Advantix is it's toxicity to cats, or so the vet I work for says. We won't sell Advantix to a household with cats because he says even after application all the cat has to do is rub up against the dog and could be affected. One of the other vets at the practice never sales Advantix because he doesn't think it works.
