Sarah, what a nightmare. Glad it didn't end up like that. Thank God True is safe.
I'm curious - does anyone know if unscrupulous labs are still paying unscrupulous idiots for stolen dogs to do lab tests on? I'm thinking this doesn't happen anymore, but I don't know. Why on earth would someone just try and take someone's dog??? What possible reason....I don't even want to think about it, makes me sick. Sick and angry.
Sandy, bunchers do still exist, so do people who "find" lost dogs and demand ransom, dog fighters look for easy to handle "bait" dogs, and people steal and then sell dogs. Too sad that people are like that, but there you have it. And then there's the true creepy crawlies and I won't even say whay they do. And then you have the PETA idiots who want to "liberate" companion animals.
I am so glad the boy friend was in the yard with True. Thank goodness.
Ah, maybe it was just some idjit who wanted a new duck dog. Or pet for his kids.
Ya know, the OP ought to warn her neighbors that there might be a dog-napper cruising their road. Esp if her neighbors have dogs, too.
That IS an excellent idea. Or, use words that do not fit the command. A apecial "training" language. "Bucket" for "Come" "Zebra" for "Stay", or something like that. Only you and your dog would know which command meant what.
And training the dog for food refusal, too would be a very good idea.

I wouldn't bet on that. I'd then have to carry a "cheat sheet" just to remember what's what!
There is that, and the fact that most friendly dogs will go to a friendly person whistling and cooing at them. Shoot, even my super aloof pup is a sucker for a lady leaning over at wanting to show him love .
That and the fact that I speak english. My dogs listen and ubderstand both German and English. German makes them more "showy" and formal.
But your scary story makes me want to go out and proof for this senerio .
I think it's definitely worth proofing - having a friend (or friendly neighbor) give your dog a command and if the dog shows ANY sign of obeying, give a strong correction and a big NO.
