Something I forgot to add...the vet tech that told me that the other doctor would do a partial neuter...he came in and kind of acted like "wtheck?" he told me he was going to talk to the other doctor, kind of questioning my doctors attitude. Then he said to me...your dog isn't very happy back there and I said, I know he's very upset, I've never seen him behave this way ever, he's always very brave and courageous. He says, yea, I mean, he's a german shepherd, why's he such a wuss?
I had no words...can you imagine? Me? No words??? I was in as much shock as anybody. I took him to Home Depot/Target/Petsmart this afternoon to proove to myself that he wasn't a wussy. I feel better now. However, he HATES slick floors! I'm emotionally drained and I think my dog is too.

Time for a new vet...no doubt about it.
Another important point - My vet is excellent and I trust him very much. But...he doesn't approve of raw feeding and my opinion on that is "so what". What I feed my girls is my business and he can't argue with their condition!

Re: vets
I have a question for any of you out there. I am looking for a vet that treats dogs naturally and is not hung up on me giving her shots every year. I have never given my dogs shots every year and have only given Rabies after they were puppies unless there was an outbreak of something in my area. I live in the riverside county area of california. I was wondering if any of you know of a good holistic vet out here?
Robbin: Sorry to hear about your vet experience. I have never had a dog that liked the vet, well one- my sheltie, she would always want to go back in after we were done-she loved the treats he gave.
I would not go to any doctor, vet or human physician who was so hung up on business reasons and not the patient. Vets are supposed to be there for their patients and to do the best for them. So, I agree, stay away from that vet!
God bless you and I hope you find a vet you can trust.

That is what happened with my vet, only he now reads about and keeps up with raw.
He laughs now, since he had been impressed with their condition for so long and then finally asked what I had been feeding.
The only reason he does not promote it openly is due to the amount of people that feed it incorrectly and do not take the time to learn.
I did call him and ask about a partial nueter and he did not see a problem with doing something like that.......I was just curious since the malpractice comment was made.

That's awesome Carol, that you have a good enough relationship with your vet to just call him up and ask about things like that. Interesting that one doc would agree to do it and one wouldn't. I'm starting to wonder what life was like for my little guy before he came to me. I know he came from Germany from the Preubenbleut kennels. Then he was with the importer from Germany to Vegas then drove from Vegas to Colorado where I picked him up. Interesting thing though...now that I think about it he has NEVER liked the vet experience. Got me thinking about a wee pup getting his ears tatooed, getting shots and going through whatever else a dog must go through to come across the big lake. I'm wondering if any and all vet experiences weren't good. How do they tatoo those ears so young anyhow?

If your vet made you upset enough to create this thread, you're with the wrong vet.
Absolutely correct!
I took one of my Mals in to have hip prelims done last Thursday, no sedation. This clinic has 4 or 5 vets and NOT ONE of them will sedate a dog to do hip and elbow radiographs (which is why I drove over an hour to give them our business)

A great way to help get them over not liking the vet is to ask your (NEW) vet if you can just drop by once in awhile and have the techs (and even the vet if they are not busy) give him treats, rub him up or play ball with him for a bit and then leave without having anything done to him.
This way he may learn that it is a good place and having stuff done to him once in awhile really is not all that bad.
It helped my hound immensley to just stop in for a treat every once in awhile. He hates the vet office. My vet will actually come outside and look him over just because he hates going in the door. He is better now that he knows when he goes in, he gets his favorite doggie crack treat. I take a roll in every time I go and they use it for Max and any other dogs that are timid at the vet office.

So am I safe in presuming that the rare vet visit that illicits nerves isn't as bad as I was thinking it was? Honest to goodness this dog has never shown fear, EVER! That going to the vet is a common issue with most dogs?

It depends on the dog and how the dog is in other aspects of his life as well, IMHO.
Sounds like your boy has just had a bad experience and is fine with everything else. That is why I would work on having the vet be a fun place along with the place where necassary care is given.

It is not an indication that your dog has bad nerves. It's an alien place, weird smells, strangers being overly familiar (sticking thermometer in butt, etc.). I don't ever wait in the waiting room with my dog. I wait outside & make them come to door when a room is ready. I do it because I want my dog to spend as little time as possible in the proximity of sick dogs, but I think it helps him stay calm too. I will say my dogs never have a problem at the vets up until the day I have to leave them for something - after that they don't want to go.
