Well here is an up date we talked with the trainer at her suggestion we have moved the AB crate to the garage and she is in it till we want to take her out to eat bathroom and strech her legs if she is in the house she is to be on lead and pinch coller at all times and only when me or my wife are there to handle her. we are keeping the 2 dogs seperated and not allowing them to see each other. We are going to talk to our kids and tell them the new ground rules, if they are not willing to follow them and learn to be dominatn over her then we will have to give her back to the breader. who is willing to take her. we in no way want to put her down knowing we messed up from the start. The great news is the trainer thinks this can be solved over time and we can have a great family pet. Teenagers WOW
Sounds exactly like what Ed recommends for a new dog that comes into the house. Set the tone, make the dog look to you for all good things and have him realize that you are in control.
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions?
David, thank God, the breeder is willing to take her back if need be. Good for you for doing your research and trying to "fix" the problem you say to have caused. If I concluded I had something to do with causing the behavioral problems, I'd step to the plate and do whatever I could to correct the problem and keep my dog. Hope things work out.
Well after a week of Tara being in her crate other than exercise and training she has made drastic improvements the trainer spent 20 min chewing my out on how I handled her and taught us the right way it was interesting to watch the immediate changes WOW any way things are good and improving to the point others notice how much better she is. On the bad side the Lab was part of our issue and that too is our fault for how we raised her but over the past year her health has declined do to age and over the past month it has taken a drastic turn for the worst. The vet didn’t know what was wrong. Well she had gotten to the point I cant watch the decline any more and we think we are going to have to put her down. Her quality of life is not good but she dose not appear to suffer so that makes it harder. Any way thinks for the info and the support, Tara will be a great dog now that we have a handle on her.
Tara has be come very good dog she now lets people in the house and doesn’t try to eat them. She is still jumpy but that is improving daily. We still don’t trust her completely so we keep an eye on he, I think in time she will regain our trust more and more and we do know that we will always have to watch her or any dog.
Unfortunately we had to put the lab to sleep Oct 1 she had gotten worse over that week end and her quality of life was not there any more. It was hard but she is better off and a relief for us not to watch her suffer.
Well after a month of tuff love she has made great improvements The Lab had to be put to sleep do tot an illness. But in all other aspects out AB is becoming a great dog. Thansk for all the info.
