How are you correcting the dog for not being in the correct position. I your popping the leash then that is wrong. The dog must learn to keep its self in position. The dog must learn to pay attention to your position instead of learning to waite for you to tell it. Try securing the leash to to your hip with your left hand. Hold it there strongly so it doesnt move. Walk with a purpose fast, slow, left, right, 180, 360. Dont waite for the dog. The dog will soon realize that it must pay attention to were you are walking or it gets a self correction for not paying attention.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
i don't have a problem with him lagging behind (if he does, he'll immediately come forward when i cluck my tongue).
he pulls - i don't give a lot of leash, but i do give enough that he can walk with me with some slack - he does not self correct out of his pulls regardless of my turns etc, when he focuses on pulling, he's focused. i give quick corrections now to get him to walk w/slack, and that works when we're out on the sidewalk etc. this is also how my trainer showed me.
