That's pretty much it (take it out of the bag and put it in the bowl). If you can find cuts or chunks of raw meaty bones that are already the right size it will save LOTS of prep/chop/clean-up time. Check out these recipes http://www.rawfeddogs.net
It's not going to hurt your dog if you don't have everything perfect to start with. In the long-term deficiencies would be a concern, but you have some time to adjust everything.
After you see how easy the meat is to feed add the salmon oil and E, veggie scraps from your table will be good too.
If you get too uptight about every aspect of the raw diet just consider the poor nutrition that dogs are fed with the crap in a bag. Even a less than perfect raw diet is better than what most kibble fed dogs get. Make sure the dog is getting adequate calcium (bones). Then add the Salmon oil and E.

diarrhea is all he has. times it is a mushy clump vice logs. maybe 2-3 times it was almost watery. I have him back on a bland diet and he's doing ok for now. he was checked for for worms at 9 weeks. it was negative.
as far as raw, I have read a lot of great articles, but I dont know anyone here in hawaii that has first hand experience with this diet. I dont think there's even a butcher shop any where near my house...hehe. closest thing I have is a safeway.
I really appreciate everyones input. Ive been to some other sites where everyone is knowledgeable but they tend to talk down to the newbies with questions. you guys are great..

well, he was doing ok and went back on Innova. all of a sudden, this morning he has diarrhea again. Im wondering if its just the food now. I have a vet appointment today. Im thinking of trying a different food to see his reaction and I asked that the vet refill his meds (metronidezole??). I dont wanna break from Innova but if its best for him then so be it. what would be an alternate good kibble? (FYI Canidae is not available in hawaii).

What was the diagnosis when you went to the vet before?
Also, no matter what food you use, when you have a dog you know has a sensitive or troubled digestive system, I would make all food switches very slowly and gradually. That is, no going from bland rice-and-chicken --- bang, to kibble.
Please post back when you get back from the vet. We will be able to give you good feeding options (including THK, which is lightweight because you rehydrate it for use..... so the shipping is not awful).

thanks connie !!I'll ask the vet what his diagnosis was. I tried some sample packets of THK embark. he took it in ok and his stool was nice little logs. I dont know if I can afford that..LoL but I'll find a way. it came out kind of oatmeal-ish. I even tossed in some kibble just ease the transition to THK. I have like 20+ pounds left of Innova. that sucks if he cant eat that no more...
with THK, should I be tossing in some kind of raw bones?

You could start with the THK as is, since he does well with it. You could keep him on it for a few days, watching his poops, and then sloooooowly start incorporating the meat (they tell you on the package how much you can add). THK is very versatile, IMO. It can be a "gravy" on a simple raw diet to add variety and produce, or it can be the main food with RMBs added.
I think it's an excellent way to get started on raw for people not quite confident yet.
It's on the top of my list for commercial foods. Also, Whole Dog Journal (which is a strong proponent of raw diets first, carefully home-made second, and then a select list of kibbles and cans) considers it a good product as a bridge between kibble and raw or as part of a permanent raw diet.
I get mine here:
http://www.leerburg.com/honestkitchen.htm
because I found that LB shipped faster than the THK site. The freight was very reasonable, too.
I use it for empty-freezer syndrome and for travel.
Remember that the cost of it per day varies depending on whether you are also feeding RMBs.

ok I just spoke to the vet. she refilled the metronydezole and reccomended I go on a bland diet again since he did ok on that the first time. BUT, she also reccomended I switch his diet to science diet growth formula. and yes she does sell that at her office :-( Ive heard so many bad things about science diet. Im definitely looking into THK though. I'll wait till he gets over the runs first, then try to ease him into a new diet.
contacted Innova. they offered to have the food tested. Innova also told me to bring the food back to the store I bought it from and have a refund issued for now.
man, this is my 3rd rottie and I never had this situation with the other 2. there were no negative results found with this puppy's tests so its not him...

That's good of Innova! Excellent!
And I am so glad you know about Science Diet.
Too many people trust it because it's in the vet's waiting room.
