Nope, I do not watch a tv show about how to train and handle dogs. You did say hit, and I took that at face value.
Try to find a wash without a lot of alcohol.

Johm, I understood what you meant instantly. However, I'm a long-time admirer of Cesar Millan's seminars, books, and videos. The word "hit" could be misinterpreted by someone who didn't know exactly what you meant.
And "idiot" is NOT acceptable.

Appologies, Connie Sutherland.
I could clean one year and wait a while before cleaning his other one. I kind of find it funny that he gets this way. I'm not afraid of him at all. He always behaves, that's why I'm not sure if this should be ignored. And is never aggressive towards humans, dogs and of course me.
No, it's not the same ear, it's whichever goes last.

You can keep on cleaning his ears, but make sure you give him a good massage before and after the cleaning. Just to help him relax a bit more.

If his ear(s) stink he may have a fungal infection. You can help clear that up by swabbing his ear out with vinegar. I think that vinegar would probably be better for him than the cleaner.
You could take Carol's idea of a break between cleaning each ear and extend it to one ear the 1st day and the other ear the next day. Alternate to see if it is the second ear of the session (he's tired of fooling with you and wants to get on with his life), or the same ear every time (infection, or it's your left hand and you are jabbing him too hard in the wrong spot).
If you start feeding him some probiotics (yogurt or kifir) it would probably help him if he has a fungal problem in his ears.
Since you are getting a good look at his teeth during this exercise it would also be a good idea to eliminate any possibility of a dental problem making him grumpy about one side of his head.
Welcome to the board I think you will get along just fine with the rest of us vocal, opinionated people

I have no problem with cleaning as needed as it seems you are doing. I had a dog with chronic ear infecitons from allergies so am very familiar with cleaning. There are ear cleaners that are irritating in and of themselves and I would have to put in ear drops after cleaning just to compensate for it.
I would suggest you try different cleaners until you find one that doesn't irritate. I have heard that the ones without propylene glycol or there's a blue solution that you can make at home would be good places to start.

My last shepherd had constant problems with her ears.
I used a blue colored cleaning solution; I think it was called “Otic Clear”. I would fill up the ear canal and massage it from the outside of the ear. She didn’t like it too much, but she did make her “happy dog” noise during the massage.
Try alternating the days and using some kind of reward for suffering through the process.

I've never cleaned any of my dogs ears other than when Cujo was a pup I used wipes when he rolled around in the mud alot. They don't stink and they're not dirty.
Lyka cleans Cujo's ears once in a while.
Whats with all the ear cleaning????

Thanks for all the replies, but my post was not intended to get advice on different ear cleansers. Most of you have GSD, which have pointed ears that dry with air. I have a pool in my house, and my dog takes a swim every couple of hours. He doesn't have chronic ear disease or anything. This liquid was given to me by the vet and he even told me to use it EVERY time after the dog takes a swim.
I was more interested in getting advice for the showing of teeth issue. Since I know he's not going to bite me, I'm curious as to wether this is a reaction and if I should correct him with a prong collar. I'm more inclined to let it go, but I would like to hear your advice. I've been lurking around for months and respect you guys opinions.

John, I think Carol should give you that detailed info on how to correct your dog for showing teeth to you (post away, Carol!) because I would NOT let that go. You may feel your dog won't bite you but if it's allowed to continue, he may one day do just that.
If your timing is right, he should be able to make the association just fine.
Also you may not have asked for ideas on different ear cleaners, but you did say that the stuff you're using itches your dog, so you may do well to look into another brand or kind of ear wash. You're probably using something that's intended to dry the water in his ears, so tell your vet and ask for another recommendation. If it's causing your dog that much discomfort, time to switch.
Maybe Connie or others who let their dogs swim often have ideas as to what to use on floppy eared dogs. I think that when the dog shakes the water off himself, that action is enough to get most if not all the water out of the ears as well. I could be wrong - anybody know?
