You are all 100% spot on! I have had the dog at my place for the past four days and she is a darling! Very smart and affectionate and she hasn't fence-run or barked ONCE!! She has however had a one hour walk every morning that leaves her (and me!!) totally tuckered out and then another walk plus free running with my dogs in the afternoon so she collapses every afternoon tired and happy!
Jinn you are spooky!! You must be telepathic because I swear you wrote my step-daughter's dialogue for her! LOL I will see what happens next but yes, given a choice between my Step-daughter's feelings or this dog - no contest!!
Sad though that the dog is a great, loving, smart, active dog and my stepdaughter is not a bad person - yet the combination of a totally self-obsessed teen and a dog which needs training and exercise can have such potentially tragic consequences for teh dog.

And Brooke:
I applaud you. Even if a step-parent is not usually a welcome source of advice..... you may not have to be. You may be able to demonstrate with not many words at all how it works when we pay attention to and treat a living being AS a living being. It works for everyone involved. Good for you.

Hey, I'm only 21, 18 years old wasn't so long ago! ;3
It's awesome to see you taking care of that dog -- sounds like he was bored and frustrated, he fell into the right hands for sure! Hopefully she'll understand that owning a dog isn't like keeping an accessory.. sure, that purse goes so great with some outfits, but when it doesn't "fit" the lifestyle or fashion of that day, you put it on a shelf and forget about it until later. You just can't do that with an animal.. it's nice to show off to your friends or whatever you do, but it's not a toy, you can't just pack it up for a few days when you're too busy or too tired. (although some may disagree with those tiny purse-dogs they breed these days, it may become tempting to put them next to your Prada bags--but don't!)
Brooke,
I don't believe anybody here thinks your step daughter is bad, just an eighteen year old thats puzzling out a life that's changing before her eyes. She is after all on that cusp we all stand on, childhood......adulthood. Some of us make it harder than it has be, some of us never take the step, and some just glide into adulthood seamlessly; maps don't matter because it's all unchartered territory and all the helmsman can do is try to keep a heading.
I now don't fear for the dog, nor worry about how it will all turn out. It sounds like you have a firm grasp of the rudder and am determined. Thank you.
Please let us know how the story ends.
