While KNPV is great, it is still a sport, and any KNPV person will tell you that there's alot of crap competing in it just like any other sport. After a dog earns their PH1, they still need to go thru a lengthy seperate process to certify as an actual police dog. The same flaws with "sport dogs that don't bite for real or work 100% in prey" that we see in every other sport still occur heavily.
Don't get me wrong, KNPV is one of the better tests out there, but a dog with a KNPV title is not automatically a great dog or even a police prospect for that matter, but I do believe that alot of dogs that are able to title in sports like IPO wouldn't do very well in KNPV and I do greatly respect a GOOD dog with a KNPV title. But to say that KNPV is the toughest sport out there that really tests the dog and weeds out the weak, well that's like this guy I spoke to a while back that told me "French Ring is the toughest sport out there! Any FR3 dog can be a police dog, but not every police dog can be an FR3 dog!".
KNPV comes closer than any other sport in teaching the dog techniques that would be useful in the street, since that is what it was created to do, but even KNPV dogs are sought through and then trained beyond their PH1 certificate by police departments.
I agree. Not all titled dogs, in any sport, are the “real the thing”. As these screening disciplines / i.e. “sports” are just the gate for promising potentials to walk through for more real life challenging needs and requirements.
next is tailoring your needs in your dog. this not only very logical and smart but necessary as well.Be it for PSD or PP or just a home protection dog.
