Maybe Connie can correct me, but aside from some of the kibble having good ingredients isn't it necessary to feed raw in order to prevent periodontal disease? I've always fed raw and I have had no problems. I've been readin Tom Lonsdale and Dr. Pitcairn (sp?). The stuff they mention about kibble makes you go mhhh...
Raw is wonderful for helping to prevent plaque buildup, but also even to reverse it! I would not have believed that, except that I have done it with senior adopted dogs with bad breath and coated yellowed teeth, and seen the big improvements after 3 months on raw.
The Hills types say that kibble cleans teeth. Kibble doesn't clean teeth any more than eating cookies cleans our teeth. JMHO.
But this thread is about doing the best the owner can within the limits of commercial food. I don't want to jijack it on the O.P.

My dog is a 1.5 year old female labrador and the breeder who sold her to us asked us to sign a contract before she released her to us. One of the items on the contract was that we promised to feed her Canidae brand kibble for her entire life!! We were surprised, but are very happy with the product so far.

We've fed our dogs/puppies Innova for generations with great results. After doing tons of research, I agree that the raw diet is best; but our local therapy-dog organization won't allow working participants to feed a raw diet, so if I want to participate in the program I have to keep feeding kibble. I've really had no trouble at all with Innova; small, firm stools, no allergies and no digestive issues. My dogs have been very healthy and energetic, and have nice coats.

I switched to Canidae about a month ago, and we love it. I am feeding les than I was on the 'junk food' kibble and her stools are smaller, and her coat is very shiny.
I am starting to give her raw as snacks at this point, and am debating making the switch at some point to all raw. (She especially likes the chicken neck popsicles!)

I was wondering? HAs anyone heard anything bad about IAMS thats what i feed my pups. They seem to like it. I had her on pedigree. Then when i put her on IAMS she got a good figure and shiny coat. What do other people suggest. I pay 20 dollars a bag and it last 2 months for now but there going.

It's easiest if you first decide what your dog should ideally be eating.
If you think it's ideal that dogs should be eating fresh raw meat, bones, vegetables, and fruit, then you would be best served by finding the kibble which matches this most closely.
You'd want to maximize the wholesome ingredients I just mentioned, and minimize everything else. Unfortuneately, in most kibbles, the main ingredients are the "everything else". Corn, rice, meat byproducts, protein of mysterious origin, and preservatives.
Based on what you've written, it sounds like you're dogs are the most important thing in your life, and you're eager to learn whats best for them.
Have you ever considered feeding a raw diet?
Just thought I'd ask if you never considered it.
It's important to learn as much as possible, but in practice, it's not terribly complicated. Here's an example:

Good links from Steven!
Please don't even consider a meat-with-no-bones diet. It's a nutritional catastrophe for a dog.
What they need is prey (like a chicken) the way it "comes" -- the bones, the meat, some organs.....
Steven's links will walk you right through it. :>

I feed raw with bones and sometimes dry food. It depends on our schedule. If I don't have time to prepare the food, I would feed EVO. It is usually problem in the morning, but I have no problem prepare my dogs' dinner at night.
