I asked the owner at my local locker about getting the heads, he said that he wasn't allowed to by law, go figure.
He also wouldn't let me stink up his cooler by opening the stomachs to empty them. They are very stinky. And do you have any idea how large a full beef stomach is??? It cannot be moved by one person, or two.
He won't grind bone either.
I hope he doesn't decide to keep his bones too.
I did just buy an electric butcher saw so I can split all the heads I do manage to get ahold of (thanks Yuko, great idea).

Lol!!! Brad you're a genius, I am SO going to put up heads around my front door this halloween
I'll be sure to send my girl over to trick or treat.
I love watching my dog eat the few pieces of RAW I've fed to her and am eager to switch but having trouble getting off the ground. But, I CAN'T WAIT to feed her a head!! It'll be like watching a nature show in 3-D!

i figured id get some and break open the skull and feed the brains..ddnt think i could give it whole and the dogs would eat it all...

What's giving you the trouble Brad? My usual problem is not co-ordinating thawing in time for meal time. But that's about it, it doesn't take much longer to prepare than kibble once you have a system in place.

While it's cool that we talked about the heads and other cool raw fed stuff. I still didn't get a clear idea of how is the best way to feed 'deer' so that the dog will get the best nutritional bang for the time I'll spend getting this together for my dog.
Would you ask the butcher to grind the bones into the meat etc? How would I ask him to pack it especially meat-bone-organ mixtures? What do you all usually do?

Geoff, I have never had a deer professionally butchered. If you're not having it butchered for your own consumption, I don't know why you'd bother. Actually, another forum member just hacks them up and we split it up from there. My dogs get whatever chunks I throw to them that day, fur and all sometimes. When you're butchering for dogs, you don't need to be so particular. It's very economical, too.
Sorry you didn't enjoy our deer head pictures and conversation. Yuko and I can get carried away with things we think are cute that others find appalling.

What an ugly black dog, Jenni
Talk about pack structure, when I hunted in Arkansas as a kid we'd use hounds to run the deer. Whenever someone killed and dressed the deer out you could watch the pecking order become VERY defined as soon as the scraps started being thrown! Many times it had nothing to do with the dogs' size, either. It was really a mental toughness that made the top dog.
The dogs ate everything, too...nothing was ever left except a hoof or teeth.

No no I didn't say that Jenni .. I actually think it is cute and funny myself. I actually find it humoureous that some people get grossed out by natures way. I lived in the bush for a good part of my life growing up and worked years in Emergency First Response so that stuff doesn't bother me a bit.
We just got a bit off topic to what my original question was that's all. Thanks for clarifying that you throw whole parts to your dogs that's what I need to know.
Though it boils down to me not having a load of freezer space.
What is the most economical way to butcher and freeze deer meat for K9 consumption without to much fuss to feed it to my dog? That's where I am at.

I left my bagged goodies outside for a good portion of last year's winter. Of course, I never had more than a couple weeks worth at any given time.
