Yea, I tried that but the pup keeps pulling it off. Roscoe will leave it on no matter how loose its secured but keeping the two separated is nearly impossible because I'm not home all the time. Putting the muzzle on good enough to keep the pup from removing it makes him uncomfortable and he won't relax.
Yup; definitely a problem with Dobes, too. So I tend to do the muzzle thing with them as well. I get them used to a basket muzzle from older-puppyhood, so it's not a trauma if they need to use one later. I like them for sending dogs out together into the yard too- I always have Dobermans and Greyhounds. I've learned that great big Dober-teeth and paper-thin Greyhound-hides don't make a good combo at playtime if they get even a little over-exuberant . I'm forgetting which DVD shows the best way to introduce the dog to a muzzle...maybe the "Dominant Dog" DVD? Ed puts a treat in the bottom of the muzzle so the dog sticks his nose in to get it. He did this a few times before buckling the muzzle on the dog. Mine have seemed to get used to basket-muzzles really quickly, so hopefully your pup wouldn't find it too stressful. I would think it would be less so than a big cone on the head, but I'm sure it depends on the dog.
