The posters s/b clear and new, not ragged or worn-looking. Photo if possible. REWARD.
On the street, you want them at the eye level of the car windshield. On the sidewalk, eye level of the pedestrian.
Shelters -- this is a possibility whether he was stolen OR took off. GO, and get much more accurate answers than any receptionist can give on the phone.
Call animal control and find out about dogs killed by traffic. (Sorry, but I'd rather know.)
IME, MOST IMPORTANT: Go door to door, because neighbors will likely know something, even if it's just having seen him run past. And ASK KIDS. In three missing-dog vonunteer searches in 2006, two were found from info given when we asked kids. For one thing, kids know if there's a "new" dog in someone's home.
Kids know about dogs, but no one asks them.
In one case, the house where the dog was had people who came to the door and lied. (Their kids liked the dog and they wanted him.) The kids on the street, however, said "He's in there." We went back and confronted them, and sure enough ....
I'm so sorry. Someone actually broke in and took him?

What she said.
The advantage to the mailings, though pricey, is that it allows you to reach people who you legally couldn't any other way. Posters will always be taken down, and there are many people who just don't look at them. My cat was once gone for 6 weeks; it was a child who noticed her and said to his mom "That's the cat on all the posters!" and Mom said "What posters?" They were EVERYWHERE; people are busy and preoccupied. KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS KIDS! They know 99% of what goes on in a neighborhood, and yet people shrug them off all the time. Getting a postcard w/a huge pic of an animal at least makes them turn it over and see what it's all about. Also, take out a newspaper ad big enough to put a decent size picture in. How about that story about the lady offering her Mustang for her dog back? I'd do it. How 'bout that shiny motorcycle? Then have the b@$+@rd$ arrested when they come to collect, since you know he was stolen.

I forgot to say that when you go door-to-door, do not go alone.

I had actually applied at the animal control here so they know me there. I went to every shelter and animal control in the Valley with pictures, nobody has seen him there. The shelters here do not accept stray animals (strange, huh?) they only take pets and every animal and owner has to be evaluated and interviewed before any animals are taken in by the shelter. Animal Control is the only facility that handles lost or stray animals, and deceased pets from traffic, etc. I also went to the Animal Control in 2 other counties with pictures, and had an ad put on the radio for 3 days (all the station would allow)
I did go door to door within a week after he was stolen, during the time I was driving around everywhere down every street calling and using the dog whistle. I have done that twice more since, and still no luck. I actually irritated several people for being in their neighborhood more than once yelling, despite it being daylight out.
I have young cousins that took pictures and posters to school, three grade schools, the biggest middle school, and two of the local highschools. Two of them actually did a show and tell about it.
Literally nobody has seen Cajun
As for the website of national pet detectives, I had no idea, that didn't even show up on my google searches! I will look into that ASAP, thanks much!!
Connie - yes, I firmly believe someone physically took him. He was not in the house during the nights I was not home (I currently live with family, that is house rule) we have a very large yard that is fully fenced all the way around with either solid wood fencing (in one small corner out back) or chain link with barbed wire, the fences are 7' and we have two gates in the front, one at the top of the driveway that is 7' and another that is 4' inside the other fencing, that seperates the garage/top of driveway area from the "yard."
I can't prove he was taken, but even though he was a very athletic dog (capable of clearing the tailgate when closed, of my Dodge Dakota Sport with ease) I believe 7' to have been past his ability to jump cleanly. There was no hair on the barbed wire and no damage to fencing or holes. I could be wrong, though. Some people say an AB like him could clear 7'
I'm just heart broken I will try the stud ad though, and I will give the pet detective thing a shot. Thanks so much everybody.
I do hope to get him back, but I will still be looking for another dog, a pup, spring/summer next year. Any suggestions on Doberman breeders, or if you know of an American Bulldog breeder that has working stock, please let me know.
Thanks
Jenn M.

You have gotten some good advice, and I wouldn’t give up. I’m sure whoever took him is being very careful right now to keep him well hidden. I bet he/she has seen your ads and posters also so they aren’t going to let too many people know about their “new” dog. I’m thinking that whoever took him was attracted to the way the dog looked, it’s doubtful they would know the dog’s pedigree or value. Besides that, without the papers he’s just another good looking dog. Since they tried once and failed then came back a second time and took him, chances are they could very well live locally. I would continue to place an ad in the paper every month or two, even if it’s just a small ad in the lost and found section. I wouldn’t be surprised as time goes by that who ever has him is going to start feeling they are in the clear and start taking the dog out in public. After all, what’s the point of having such a cool dog if you can’t show him off?
Good Luck,

Thanks you guys, I know that I really should not get my hopes up so high but after so long I can't help it. The person said he looked skinnier than the dog in my pictures but the head and markings were exact and there are not a whole lot of dogs around here with the mantle/irish/body suit that look like him. Ah. I am not going to be able to sleep tonight.
