Rabbit pelts are eaten; deer pelts are prized items to be dragged around and lorded over the other dogs. Yuko, I have a Christmas card in mind I think you may like...
And you would love my freezer, but I would have to search you before allowing you to leave the premises. Last inventory showed 9 legs, 3 heads, 17 whole bunnies in plastic bags, one heart, a few lungs w/some trachea attached, and countless garbage bags full of pieces-parts. I make Caleb take the stuff out of bags himself. I give him the whole thing, bag and all, and he unwraps it. I still don't really enjoy touching the stuff all that well.
Thanks, Jennifer. He did not find it so funny. He says if he can do that to a deer, you probably shouldn't laugh at him so much.
Carol, can one woman say to another woman "nice rack?"

Carol - Nice buck! Western count that's considered a 4-point - and I nice one
Having grown up here in So. Oregon I have an appreciation for Muleys and Columbian Black Tail. Never did catch white tail fever though I wouldn't mind going down south and seeing if I can snag the next world record
Working with my last horse I fractured my humerus and tore a lot of muscles in my back almost 2 years ago, haven't been able to hunt but I refuse to sit out next year!!

Yep, in the east he would be considered a 9 pt. We have big deer here.
If anyone can get tags and wants to come hunting next year....I'm game (no pun intended)

Why would he be called a 4 x 3? He has 5 tines on one side and 4 tines on the other......that would be 9 in the east.

Haha Jenni feel free to run all your Christmas card ideas past me. It's nice to have people to share my bloodthirsty humour with.
I tried the "guess the animal and the parts" game when I showed my freezers to some friends but they weren't quite as enthusiastic about it as I'd hoped. Oh well
Ahh... you have an enviable inventory. I'm between loads at the moment so my freezers are sad and empty. I think I just have 2 pig heads, a lamb pelvis and a few stray eyeballs lying around in mine now. I'm impatiently awaiting the new and exciting fall bounty from Taro's breeder!!!
Oooh, never thought of having the dogs unwrap their meals themselves! I also hate that part - of having to touch the yucky gooey stuff. I just enjoy watching
Working with my last horse I fractured my humerus and tore a lot of muscles in my back almost 2 years ago, haven't been able to hunt but I refuse to sit out next year!!
Jennifer that's so cool!!! I also fractured my humerus from falling off the last horse I was training!! It was a proximal humerus fracture so right up there near the shoulder... back was fine though. Yikes, your injuries sound painful!! (broken bones hurt, but only for a day or two...)
So...... for a city girl who's never hunted before, how hard is it to get started and bring home some mega deer like Carol??
Maybe I should just tag along with the experts and take notes first... great job again, Carol. Really impressive!

You are more than welcome to come down and tag along, and you can check out the laws for SD for obtaining tags and licenses at
http://www.sdgfp.info/
I will share with you, no question about that

Holy crap, there's a lot of reading there. Thanks for the link Carol! And for the offer
I think I will also read up on the local hunting regulations and see if there's something closer to home where I could try my luck... of course I'd have to learn to shoot first. They probably don't allow you to set your dogs loose to do the killing
Man, I have a whole new respect for all those hunters I get my dog's meats from!
