Lisa Mr. Abady really likes himself alot. In fact he has quite a reputation in the dog show world. You kind of have to get past that and read the ingredient labels on his products. He really cares about animals. Give him a call he will talk to you all day about animal nutrition.
I just looked at my raw I had in my freezer and mine (NPF formula) doesn't have any beef meal. I know the one thing I don't like about his raw is some of the formulas have rice in them. The NPF raw formula does not have any rice so that is the one I now supplement with....just when I forget to take food out to defrost.
I've found some interesting stuff on the Abady site regarding soy and beet pulp. The soy/saponin and beet pulp explanation for bloat is interesting.
If it's true why don't more small breed dogs bloat?
Why not puppies?
Do large breed raw fed dogs bloat?
This is the answer as to why kibble fed dogs grow faster than raw fed dogs:
"Saponins also interfere with the enzymes concerned with energy metabolism. Of particular significance are those enzymes that are concerned with the citric acid cycle. Inhibition of this major metabolic pathway has profound effects on nutrient utilization and animal growth. To compound the problems, research has proven that soybean and sugar beet saponins promote rapid growth, while interfering with the protein-splitting enzymes involved in tissue production. As Mr. Abady explained in his penetrating article "The Secret Is Out," (available from the Abady Company at no charge upon request) the majority of commercial feeds (in all categories) grow dogs fast but cannot produce corresponding measures of tissue quality. As a result, tissues and organs are inadequately constructed because of the absence of vital nutrients, making them either too weak to support the animal during growth, or causing them to break down prematurely, after growth has ceased. This principle can apply to any of the organs of the body explaining the enormous incidence of impaired reproduction, bone problems, skin and coat problems, allergies, thyroid, heart, kidney, eye, and auto-immune problems, just to mention a few. The key to preventing such problems lies in feeding on a higher nutritional plane." http://therobertabadydogfoodcoltd.com/dog%20food%20&%20Saponins.htm
He's either on to something, or he's a quack. . . or maybe both. At the least, he's been eccentric for over 35 years
Check out some of his antics in this Sports Illustrated article.

I live near the processing plant. He is widely known as a loon. He has used deer road kill in his food. He also will not allow anyone in the plant. I just plain don't trust him. Any time someone goes off THAT much about some obscure topic, makes one wonder who he is appealing to?
The ingredients for his raw are not on his website. I used to feed it to my GSD that is how I know what is in it. I know only use his NPF formula for when I forget to take food out of the freezer to defrost.
Also on his website he does not list the ingredients on the kibble formulas he has (If I am not mistaken there are 3 now). I feed Allstar to my kibble fed dogs which is a tripe and muscle meat based food. High protien, low carb, low fiber and the dogs do great.
There is no doubt that he is over the top. I have read more stories on him than I care to recall. But the bottom line for me is that the dog food (kibble & granular) is very good so I leave the personal stuff out of it.
Thank you for all the interesting posts on Abady Feed, and Robert Abady's personal antics. They were very helpful. Also thanks for the comment on turkey causing gas.
