I would just like to note here that I had a foster who developed an allergy to chicken. His coat lost condition and fell out, so he had a moth-eaten appearance. He didn't have a rash and was NOT itchy. I did a lot of experimentation to find out what the allergy was, as soon as we eliminated chicken from his diet, his fur started to grow back almost immediately. (I suppose it could have also been vaccinosis in my case, but eliminating chicken cured his problem, so I don't think so).
Bottom line is, allergies are probably mostly, but not ALWAYS itchy. I think they can present in a number of different ways. I've personally, never seen an allergy so localised though. (Except a contact allergy). Normally it's systemic, isn't it? So the dog would have a rash on her feet too, for instance?
I vote for ringworm.
But as you say: "He didn't have a rash."
A rash caused by allergies (in dogs) itches.

I guess my posts were foggy. Hey, it's early here. ;>
If the dog has an allergy that manifests in atopy (a skin rash), then it will be itchy.
If the dog has a non-itchy rash, that would be not histamine-related and not allergy-triggered.
The exceptions are so not-likely as to be not worth posting.
This dog has a non-itchy rash, it appears, so the last thing to consider is a true allergy.
But you're right, of course, that what many vets know about allergies OR nutrition is often negligible.

Thank you guys for the replies. I guess I should keep a closer eye on her to make sure it's not itchy. I have never caught her licking at it, so I thought it wasn't itchy. I actually thought she may have jumped over something and grazed her belly and that it was a big scratch. But since it's still there, I know that's not the case. It's a bit dry in that area and flaky and red. That's all I can really tell.
Amber, thanks for the compliment. I too think she looks really good. I really like her diet so I'm hoping it has nothing to do with that.

My chicken allergic dog developed itchy pustules and flakes along either side of his back near the tail (like a flea allergy) and also gnawed at his toes and that area. He was very itchy.
He is a survivor of perianal fistula surgery as well (3 years not recurrence and they were very bad) -
I did not see the pix when I first posted but darned, that looks like some kind of contact irritation or burn.

Hey there, Alex. My vet friend sent this reply to the pics:
The location makes me think environmental allergen. Difficult to assess without an up close view and a more detailed history from the owner. It doesn't look like any ringworm that I've ever seen.
Sorry that's not more helpful. I guess I should have known he wouldn't be able to be more specific without talking to you or seeing the dog..duh! (What kind of vet would he be if he did?) Internet pics are hard, but I was hoping maybe he'd say, "It's so OBVIOUS...it's _______" Oh well.
Post back and let us know, will you?

Alex, have you noticed yet whether the dog is scratching?
Also, have you looked inside the ears for inflammation, and between the toes?
I hope not, to both! ;>

Good morning ladies. Thanks for the try Amber.
Connie, she has not been scratching at all. I checked her ears a cpl days ago and they seemed normal and did not smell weird either. She doesn't have any kind of inflammation between the toes either.
I rubbed some ointment on her yesterday, and the rash looked better. I can't think of the name right now, but the vet gave it to us mos ago for some bumps she had. I looked it up before I used it and it said it was for bacterial fungus or something like that. It also said it could be administered in the ear. I'll have to get the name of it when I get home.

Good job, Alex.
You want to keep a VERY close eye on any kind of bacteria-fungus combo rash, to be certain the skin remains intact. (You want to treat it topically right away in hopes of wiping it out before it's inside.)
Good work.

Hey thanks Connie. I'm trying! Here's what I've been applying to the rash. It's called "Animax ointment", contains: nystatin, neomycin sulfate, thiostrepton, triamcinolone acetonide. Phew! I've been applying it twice a day. The rash looks about the same today. Maybe she's been licking at it in her crate?

You could increase her Salmon oil & Vit E to speed healing. Zinc is very good for healing skin.
Could it be mites? If so Ivermectin would clear it up.
