Yeast? What the???
on the skin???
Why would a dog get yeast on a raw diet? This is ticking me off.. GRRR
Well, for starters if you are feeding fruits and below ground veggies they are loaded with sugar. If you are feeding any treats with grains (biscuits of any kind)they convert to sugar.
If you are feeding any dairy at all, lactose is sugar.
sugar feeds yeast.

Hey Lynne,
Can ACV be used to clean out the ear itself? I seem to remember reading that somewhere...?
Look at that link; yes I think you can use it with no problem in the ear.

Wow, Cindy...I didn't think about veggies and fruits being an issue. I don't feed any bisquits...so that's not an issue.
I thought veggies were okay, though.
hmm..okay, says here, Potatoe Fiber (below ground veggie) berries for antioxidants...tomatoes (another fruit) and sweet potatoes. Interesting....
Okay, so...this dog has had ear issues for a long time...the crap food we used to feed would explain that, now we have a the new food but it has veggie/fruits in it. So, does this mean that the dog has strictly a meat diet? Doesn't that do something funky to the Ph balance hard on kidneys?? Or is that just a human issue?
Jeez, just when you think you have things figured out..
eggs are considered dairy but they don't have any kind of sugars, do they?? I feed yogurt on occasion but sometimes I cant find the plain so I will feed vanilla which i'm willing to be my life has sugar added to it...

I don't think eggs are technically dairy - and based on nutrition info, they have only trace carbs/no sugars - so they're probably OK (they get lumped into dairy when people talk about vegetarians and "ovo-lacto" vs. pure vegetarian... they are a PRODUCT of animals, but not at all the same thing as milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream and butter).
Vanilla yogurt DEFINITELY has sugar in it - I've bought it by accident a number of times and looked at many labels. I'd avoid it.

Carole, when not feeding complete raw, we feed Taste of the Wild, which I have LUUUUUUUVVVEEEDD.

Whah!! I will feel bad if I have to change. I think raw that you feed from the chubs has veggies/fruits also. What dog food has NO veggies/fruits, only meat?
I know the question will come up why dry dog food at all...cuz my schedule is nuts and if I can't feed raw or forget to defrost something in my hectic life I can always resort back to a 'guilt free' dog food for convenience and time sake.

Also, Robbin, for a dog that I fostered that had an ear infection: Since he scratched at it, he had tiny sores in his ear and alcohol based cleaners would hurt him. And the last thing I want to get my dogs nervous about is ear-cleaning. The stuff we use now is alcohol-free.
However, I'm just talking about general cleaning and not any treatments. I'm pretty sure they have alcohol-free yeast treatments as well, though.
And as for the pre-made meats that are veggie-free, check out this link:
http://www.animalfood.com/pets.htm
It's for Majestic Raw diet and has 100% Ground Beef, Fresh Whole Organ Meats, Tripe & Ground Meaty Bones. I had my dogs on this before I went totally raw and my dogs did spectacularly well on it. I still keep some on hand as a backup.

Okay, no rashes or anything on the body and the skin looks healthy.
I have been cleaning his ears with vinegar/water as suggested on this web site. I also have some ear solution that I got from the vet, a while back that says (Gent, Dex & Hydro p)
As far as Levi is concerned, when I clean one ear it is no issue, when I clean the favored ear he can't handle it w/o shaking his head. No gunk comes out, it seems clean, do you think it might have something stuck down in it?
Back to the original question, is there a dog food that hasn't any of the sugary plant matter?? What about PH balance and kidney function in a strictly meat fed dog? Sometimes the dogs wont eat certain veggies, I can just imagine trying to feed them parsley with their meat. I'd be cleaning parsley out of the bowls after they were done, lol

Robbin, I feed zuccinis, which are pretty mild tasting and very low sugar. I'll use the fine side of a cheese grater to effectively pulp a table spoon or two into Oscar's bowl - because it's so finely grated, it blends right into the meat, salmon oil and raw egg, or whatever other non-RMB ingredients that go into the meal. Pulverizing leafy greens like beet greens and parsley in a food processor, using a little salmon oil as a lubricant, works well also. And if you make a few cups at a time, it should last a whole week if you dole it out by tablespoons at a time (don't need more than that per meal...).
A lot of people don't feed veggies at all though - depending on which natural diet you subscribe to, you may not need them...
