Brenda, so glad you seem to have found a good comfort zone for Star!! She's far too young to be suffering so much, but I'm thrilled to hear that you've discovered a dosage of supplement that keeps her mobile and pain free - great news!!
A question for others who use glucosamine for their dogs - Are there any negatives to starting a young dog on glucosamine, or is it one of those things that helps if it can help but has no adverse effects in a dog who doesn't necessarily need it?
I give Oscar a single daily dosage (for his weight) on most days because he runs around 6 miles a day with me, nearly every day. He's a brute about exercise and play and has had a number of "sports" injuries over his almost 3 years of life (nothing lasting or debilitating by any means) so I thought - a little extra joint support couldn't hurt... is this good thinking? or a waste if he isn't showing symptoms of any problems?

So far, there have been no real studies that proved any benefit to a young dog with healthy joints. Or at least, I have not seen one yet, and I keep up pretty well on those things.
OTOH, without x-rays, who knows whether there are OA changes in an adult dog? I have a four-year-old adoptee who was x-rayed last year for something else and we saw tiny OA changes in one hip. This was a complete surprise to me.
I watch his weight carefully (I did anyway) and he gets glucosamine now.

Good to know Connie - thanks!
Maybe I'll reallocate that part of the "dog budget" for now!
If you want to do something like that Natalya, I'd spend the money on Ester C b/c at least there have been studies on Ester C and the prevention of certain joint diseases (HD,ED), plus it's great for arthritis. I don't use Glucosamine on a healthy dog, but I use Ester C on all of them.

Thanks Jenni! I've stopped giving the glucosamine for now and will look into Ester C.
