Ok bad news. We're thinking of placing Reese in a new home. The training is not going well and frustrating the whole family. We were doing well for about a week and decided to give her more freedom outside the crate. She went right back to peeing on the carpet. The first day, I just said it was an accident and moved on. The second day, we took her outside to do her business and she's lying next to the bathtub ( I was in it!) and decides to get up and pee. Now we're mad. The third day, she's laying in the room looking like she's ready to go to sleep so we go to the kitchen to get some comfort food. We come back and she's hidden under the bed because she peed at the foot of the bed!
So I'm frustrated, my boyfriend is beyond frustrated, and even my 10 year old is a little tired of what's going on. I suggested the vet in a few weeks when we can actually afford it but everyone is pretty tired of the "accidents" in the house. We've noticed to that she has some type of nervous problem and maybe seperation anxiety when we leave because she's always going in her crate when we leave.
It's really a shame. She's such a cutie but I don't know what else to do

And you had her checked for a UTI?
Potty-training takes 100% consistency.
She pees because she has pee in her that she wasn't outside to do.
I'm not clear about why she was left alone to pee on the rug instead of being tethered to you or crated until potty-training was complete.
The dog doesn't get it. The dog is NOT peeing to make you mad.
I can give you very clear step-by-step directions for training her if you want them, but it really does take consistency and setting her up for success...... outside all the time so the outdoor-potty habit can take hold (I start with a trip outside at least every hour) and NO opportunity for indoor potty.....
Please don't make the mistake of thinking she is somehow doing it deliberately. She's not.

Hi Connie. I'm trying to explain this as easily as possible and maybe it's not coming out right so please pardon the ignorance! I think the frustration is coming from training so many other dogs in the past with no problem and being ready to pull our hair out with Reese since she's not taking to it so well. I swear on everything I love that we take her outside to do her business and she will pee AND poop and come back in the house only to pee about 20 minutes later (sooner if we crate her and leave). I have suggested and thought about a UTI and once we think that's the problem, she magically stops peeing! The whole peeing on the rug thing began again when we decided to give her more freedom outside of her crate for doing such a good job of doing her business outside. I now see that was a huge mistake.
But I've been through some of the e-books again and we're going to do the whole GW thing for establishing a pack leader because she does pull on her chain and does things that we didn't even realize was obvious disrespect as a pack leader and ordering up some DVD's and scraping up some funds to have her checked by a vet to rule out the UTI thing. So we're (rather I) going to give it another go around. It seems a little "mean" to crate her 24/7 besides feeding and waling but she's such a cutie and I really don't want to give her away.
I'll keep ya posted
So round 3 (or is it 4?!?!) begins.....

Tethering her to you will work well. It give her no chance to potty inside - you get to pick her up and take her out and have a party for her when she does it outside. A new habit happens!
UTIs are often erratic, BTW.

Connie you have given sound advice and I can't thank you enough. Tethering has worked well. But again, we walked the dog, she peed, we put her in her crate, and she peed before we even left the house! My boyfriend and I were a little po'ed since we kept her out for awhile to make sure she went to the bathroom. So I cleaned the crate, we went out for maybe an hour, came back, and saw that she peed again! If I weren't here, I swear my boyfriend would have called the humane society to come and get her. She's fine when someone's home. But the second we get up to leave the room or the house, I believe her nerves are getting the best of her. I'm trying my best to "seem" calm so my boyfriend doesn't feed off of my anger.
Advice? Yes we're taking her out frequently and no we're not free feeding her. Our options (and patience) are kinda running thin at this point. She's about 2 steps away from being housed somewhere else. It's been 4 months

Melissa,
There has been several mentions of UTI...have you had her checked for that yet?

Well good news is the vet gave the dog a clean bill of health. Said she was excitable because of some sexual mumbo jumbo I didn't understand. It came down to smelling my boyfriend's dog on his clothes (even though his dog lives with his mom) and some other stuff. Basically, she said all I need to do is get her spayed and the problem should be solved. We scheduled that one for a few weeks from now. He also gave me some tips on how to stop the "all the time" barking and stuff. She has been "pee free" in her crate for a few days now and is coming to terms that the crate is her home and is going in voluntarily already. She's also submitting that she is NOT the pack leader and doing things she should have been doing in the beginning but we weren't aware of it as not respecting us as leaders. What a world of difference a trip to the vet makes!

it took me i don't know how long to realize that 3 of my dogs are multiple pee-ers.
Especially Roxie-she was already spayed, an adult, no uti or anything, and was having accidents as soon as we got in from a walk. For months.
Then i realized that every morning, she pees 3 times.
2 others were doing something similar. Bart has to poop twice in the mornings.
So even if i had them out, and watched them go, i had to wait for that magical pee number whatever-or they went straight back into the crate.
just something to think about.

Hmmm...... Now that she is spayed, did the spaying work to cure her housebreaking problem??
(I personally don't see how they are related, but what do I know, I'm not a vet??????)
Edit: and for the dog's sake, please change her food.
