No way Jose! We do this. We're taking Noah to an Agility class in the next few weeks, so Right and Left is a big thing for us right now.
I'm also getting a lot of mileage out of "touch" by putting my hand in complicated places and making her figure it out. Next, I'm going to teach "touch" and point at objects. That's gonna be a doozy.
Regarding taking the sit further. You mentioned 'dog in a box'? The answer lies in that exercise. Patience.
I am not sure how Ed likes to do it (haven't read his offered source in this thread) but my local trainer starts by rewarding OFFERED behaviors and shaping them. She got us to train our dogs to sit in a box without ever showing/telling them ANYTHING. One step at a time. The dog will start throwing out all kinds of interesting things trying to figure out what's next, you just gotta wait for it.
