Mallory: I would begin at the beginning and do the ground work with him all over again, (not sure if you have done it up to this point)I am not sure, but he probably will continue to mark, you just want to train him to do it only outside. It is kinda good you are moving, you can start right from the beginning and maybe with the scent from him marking not there, he won't be as likely to mark. But right now I would begin to train him in house manners. Use treats, begin marker training and show him outside is the only place to go. I had a little dog who marked and he was fixed at a young age, but he only did it outside so it wasn't an issue and he was the only male dog I had.
May God bless you

he was chained outside until i got him, so he has never been house trained. I just know that he is going outside, but marking in the house too.
i knew he wasn't housetrained, and i know it takes time, i was just concerned about him permanately marking in my house, even though he goes outside.
The dog I adopted last year is a senior who had been chained outside all his life..... so zip in the potty-training (or any training) department.
I treated the marking exactly like the potty-training, even though I had heard and read that it was a different thing (and yes, I know it is) and should be corrected for. But I could not always tell with him which it was, because he tends to be a deliberate careful-aim pee-er, which looks like marking.
So I tethered him to me and took him out every time he lifted his leg, period, with the whole yay-party-cake-and-ballons reward after for good potty.
I realize that this was not conventional training against marking, but it worked fine.
He's a small dog, small bladder, and he had not been inside a house for 7 years, yet within a month he had accidents only when he came to me in the wee (haha) hours and I didn't wake all the way up to let him out. Even then he would get as close to the outside door as possible.
I agree that it might work out better that you are moving.

Maybe if i keep him in their longer, he wil have to go so badly, he'll empty out all at once.
No. IME, they will always save a little for a marking situation. Who knows when a hydrant is going to pop up?
I wouldn't count on that at all.

haha. Yes, i have noticed they will always save some. Do they have a special chamber or something???? Where does it all come from?
I might have to do that Connie, though it will mean 50 million trips outside....

whenever I get a new dog in they mark the house for a few days. It takes them a bit to understand that the Entire place is a den and not just a small area. It usually passes, nurtured or not unless there are two males involved. I correct the mistake and mark the positive by praising and treating the dog every time he goes outside. within a week they usually seem to get that outside means good things and inside means a long time in the crate.
great luck to you and your new dog

Totally worth it. That means 50 million not-markings.
It's short. Tethering is THE fastest method, I can say from long experience. I don't always have to resort to it, but it really cannot fail. The dog can't make a mistake and there are a lot of opportunities for praise and rewards.
Yes, I think there is special chamber. Like the "reserve" gas tank in the car.

Oh, that's a good point..... especially with a heretofore outdor dog.
