if it's a cold water salt water fish or a fish found in rivers/lakes and is good enough to be table food for humans, it's ok for my dog...obviously, you just need to be aware of mercury poisoning and do some research about where you get your fish.
There are some fish, I forget which ones, that should not be fed raw. I believe a type of salmon is included (and may be the only one, I really can't recall) as it can carry a very dangerous parasite that is killed when it is cooked. I'm no sure if Mike was talking about cold water and salt water, or cold salt water, but thought it should be clarified as salmon could fall into all three categories anyway.

Good catch, Elisabeth. :>
NO RAW SALMONIDS FROM WEST OF THE CASCADE RANGE.
This comes up over and over. The complicated process of how the parasite causes salmon poisoning (not in humans or other species -- apparently, in canids only) has been explained here, but what matters is that you don't give raw salmonids from the Pacific northwest.

Since it came up these are the types of Salmon from the pacific NW and how to tell them apart from Atlantic salmon which IMO is the only salmon to feed dogs. Generally speaking pacific coast salmon are insanely expensive and i'd be surprised if anyone fed them to their dog just due to price but I guess a couple of freezerburn specials could happen.

Mine eat raw fish all the time. No problems at all with bones.
You might want to cut off any sharp fins (they might cut a lip). The fins on whole tilapia, for example, are pretty prickly. But bones are fine, and heads are the best part!
