Sheesh, Jennifer...terrify me why don't you!!!
Well, the real question is...should I give him water or avoid water? The clay must be dehydrating, but if it swells to 15 times it's size, maybe adding water isn't such a hot idea?
Of COURSE this stuff happens when the vets are closed...

This one says that it is bentonite that is one of the ingredients in many litters, so I would hold off on water as well.....until you figure out which one it was.
Bentonite expands with liquids and gets hard. We use it in our stock tanks if they get a leak.......
Jennifer and I must be searching at the same time.....I would avoid water for now.....

Okay...I'll hold off on the liquids for awhile. Would you say that 24 hours is a reasonable time to expect any issues, if there are any?
Just want to know when I can safely assume we're out of the woods.
I searched the 'net too, but found some conflicting advice. I honestly think that he should be okay. My thinking is that if it was a common major issue, then it would of come up on this board before. I mean, I know that litter-diving is not uncommon for dogs!
I'll make sure we switch litters, though, just to be safe.

If he seems to be straining to go to the bathroom or acts lethargic or disinterested in food or play, then I would have him checked out, but high chances are, he went after the morsels of poop that had less coating......which is good.
24 hrs is a good average, however it depends on the dog too. Some quicker, some longer to produce symptoms.

My husband looked at some brands online (good suggestion, Carol) and is pretty sure it was Scoopaway Multiple Cat formula.
According to their website, http://www.scoopaway.com:
Q. Is Scoop Away® litter harmful to cats or other animals if ingested?
Scoop Away® litter is not known to cause harm to animals, including kittens, when ingested in small quantities. However, if a pet eats a large amount of any litter (i.e. a bowlful), we recommend that you contact your vet.
Helpful, wasn't it? Especially the "bowlful" amount.
I don't think the rotten Corgi ( ) ate a bowlful, but then again, that might just be me not wanting to picture him actually consuming that much cat poop. Blech.
I just noticed that in my sig pic, the Corgi has the look of a dog who just ate cat poo.

Sorry Amber! Didn't mean really freak you out! As for types of litter I can recommend a great natural clumping (non clay, no dust) litter or two that are much better at odor control than any clay litter I've ever used, and is not expensive. I use rabbit pellets.. rabbit food, alfalfa/plant pellets.. for my ferrets and for kittens. It doesn't clump, though, and I only use enough to cover the bottom of the box with an inch and a half or so, and throw it out every day. Lots of people have no problems with clumping litters, but it causes lots of problems for several other people. Again.. sorry, I did sort of sound frantic lol

If it's scoopable, he probably only ate what was attached to a bigger "treat" so I doubt he ate as much as you're worried about, but then again...
I will tell you that when I first got my older APBT, she did it often, and was never harmed by it...unless the stuff causes brain damage, lol. I did search the ingredients online once and nothing jumped out at me as being uber-dangerous. Certainly not something you'd want to eat daily, but not emergency vet stuff. I wonder if we could find something online that says what to do in this case...
Edited to say my post is no longer relevant, I took so long to finish my reply !

No, that's totally okay! I would rather be freaked out than too lax about the whole thing! And thanks for the recommendations about the litter...I'll pass that along to the hub.

Ha! Well, if it's brain damage, then I guess I'll never know with the Corgi... Again, he seems totally fine right now, except that he has vile breath. Gotta find that toothbrush...
