Not sure about where you are at and how farming is, but here, they go around it when they cut grass and alfalfa IF there is any in the field at all. Farmers do not want it in their hay, same thing with weeds.
And to be honest.....I have never seen ditch weed in a hay field.
We see it in the pastures that are used for grazing.
Hay fields are plowed and planted pretty well so it limits the amount of weeds and other stuff that grow.

Well i am over in Kosovo and farmers here take what they can get so i honestly don't know how common it is. I might take a squad back to that location and find where they got the hay.

"Of course", I say to myself, shaking my head. That would be why you posted in the Narcotics Training section.
I have been assuming ED MWD all this time, since your theatre of opeation is in Kosovo.
Well crap, thats going to make my job a bit harder considering if its mixed in with hay then im not going to have a clue if my dog is responding to that or to narcotics buried under the hay
If I'm reading this correctly then your concern is that your dog might give a positive indication on plain hay, clean of any target odor? If that's the case then this is just a training issue, all you will need to do is proof the dog's training.

My concern is that ditch weed is mixed in with hay all over the place. And if we are looking for narcotics (other then ditch weed) then each time we find contaminated hay we don't know if there is hidden narcotics or just the ditch weed.

Since ditch weed is so low in THC is it possible the rest of the scent picture is different enough from psycho-active marijuana that the dog *could* differentiate? So that you use it as a negative in your training along with marijuana as a positive?

My only reference is cadaver since that is all I have worked with. Pig and human cadaver scent are very very close. So close that the Brits have been known to use pigs for training human cadaver dogs.
But in the US, we have a lot of wild pigs so we have to train the dogs not to alert on pig decomp, only human.

Yikes! That is a wee bit of a problem, eh. I'll be honest, this is beyond my scope right now. Perhaps you could PM a few of the "Hawiian 5-0" for some input; maybe their PMs send a notice to a persoanl e-mail account and you'll get an answer. Mean time.. I'll ask a few cop friends and e-mail some of the RCMP handlers that I know to see what their advice would be.

Michael,
Did any of the other dogs hit on the ditch weed? How old and experienced is your dog? Might be a "proofing off of" is your dog is young and still a bit inexperienced????
It would be interesting to know if the others (older more experienced dogs) are having issues as well.

Well i am here only here for about 30 more days so it wont be my problem for long but it would be nice to avode this problem in the future (my future in perticuler) so i am thinking the first thing i need to do is grab a bag full of ditch weed with hay mixed in.

My dog is the only narcotics dog here (for the US) and i think there is probably only 3 narcotics dogs in Kosovo.
He is 8 years old and trust me he is good as much as i would like to take credit for it i honestly cant its just his natural ability. So no there really is no older or more experienced narcotic dogs within the country.
