Just purchased this DVD and I'm looking forward to receive and begin the Ground Work with my Jack Russell, its a 3yrd neutered male, pretty smart, but he doesn't see me fully as his pack leader and I can' do obedience unless he is in a calm-submissive state as I heard on the podcast, I hope this drives thru the idea to "Sparky"
How long without rushing it does establishing this leadership take in your opinions.
Hello groups, my dvd finally arrived "Establishing Pack Structure" wow, I'm so impressed with all the information its overwhelming but very straight forward. Got a couple of questions: 1st - Everytime my dog greets other dogs, his a male jrt 3yr old rescued on 3/15/08, he'll try to mount the other dog, regardless of sex, so it looks like his trying to have sex with all the dogs, what does this mean ? And now I know not interact him to other dogs till I establish myself as the pack leader.
2nd - I already got him to go to his place 100% of the time when I tell him but sometimes when I call him he won't come out of his crate and he'll look at me like saying, "just let me be," what does that mean in Dog language.
Hi MelLane, my dogs are outdoor dogs but my girl GSD that is 2yrs old is the exact same way, she does not show aggression, but she is overly excited/rambuntiously playful when people come to the house. I also will be purchasing the dvd pack structure and hopefully that is all she needs plus more basic training. Your dog looks just like my male dog of 3yrs. I am hoping to try and get my picture of my two in here but I am having a hard time because I do not have my own webside or understand about URL retreiving. How do I create that if I need to? I can't wait to get my dogs more controled so that we can take them camping with us. We took our drak and he was very good but then again he is more calm, he just barked when dogs or people went by but we will be fixing that problem hopefull if that can be fixed. Actually, I purchased a no-bark collar that seems to be working at this time because they are not barking as often now only when needed. Holly our female is the one who always bugs drak to play and chase her. We alone used the crate or cage when we go camping with drak. We have not yet brought Holly camping because at this point we need to have them obey first expecially the come command. I am not sure but maybe the electronic trainging collar might be something to think about but without a collor how do you get control of them, do you still use a leach at all times?

I would (1) use paragraphs and also put one subject in one post; (2) start training the recall now in your house, then your back yard, then (when it's solid) with changes of venue and with distractions.
There are lots of recent threads on training the recall, and I'll find you a couple if you can't find them.

BTW, I would have the dog on a line or leash until you have a great recall, which you need whether or not the dog goes camping, and I'd be careful not to play keep-away with the recall, which turns non-compliance into a fun game for the dog.
thanks, I would very much appreciate the help. I do not have very much time or the knowledge where to look in the forum I still am getting used to it. I only have time on my work breaks and sometimes in the evenings at home when the kids are finaly in bed maybe for 1/2 or 1 hr if I don't fall asleep myself.
thks
Maggie
You'll notice that I (and others) work on the recall all the time by using it to call for every good thing in the dog's life in the house before even taking it "on the road" (outside) and cementing the dog's perception that hearing her name called is great news, because it means good stuff.
If you have called the dog and played keep-away or called the dog to be corrected, you might want to start anew with a different command.

P.S. The recall is fun to teach if you start fresh with no bad associations and never call in the teaching phase if you have a doubt about the dog coming and cannot reinforce it with your long line to reel her in with no comment if she doesn't come.
The basic idea (for me) is that the dog learns to love hearing the recall (and also learns that there is no option anyway).
I start with no distractions at all. I start in a boring closed yard or indoors. Distractions come later.
