Jennifer, Connie, and Sheila - It could very well be a stress yawn. A lot of times when I'm making them sit and wait for their food to be put down, they yawn with the high pitch whine. I never knew what to make of it other than they didn't want to sit there, which they probably don't (but they do), they want to be fed!
Thanks for your thoughts, I'm glad to know it's not a rebellious attitude. I have four kids and thought, gee, my dogs are even showing me this attitude. Thank you guys!!

Dogs also will yawn as a sign of anticipation IMHO. Anticipation can be "stressful" in a sense if you think about it.
As an example, I notice that my dog will yawn when I am getting ready to take him for a walk. The walk is a positive event for sure and as I am getting my s**t togeather he will be at the door waiting and let out the odd high pitched whine/yawn.
Exactly, there's a lot of situations where it could be either stress or anticipation. I'm not sure why I didn't think along those lines before. I also notice my dog yawns in the car quite a bit. I think that's a result of stress. But, waiting for a walk or food is probably anticipation.
I've learned so much reading questions and answers, this website is so interesting!
Bayley does that when she knows we're going out, she yawns and lets out a squeak. Usually followed by a stretch or two, likes she's stretching out getting ready for a run.
