heh heh....i'm number one! she's been slowly starting to give me submissive body language (or removing the dominant body language for a while).
in fact, she (is tethered on a 4 ft lead right now) just ran towards the rabbits condo, and i put my hand on her side. she whipped her head around with her teeth bared, looked at my hand, and then gave it a lick!
Hmmm...my dog licks also...
Honestly it reminds me of when I saw her with her mother/siblings. To me it appears to be affection/bonding, need for attention? I swear she snuggles like she did her mom/sibs as a tiny pup. Dogs *are* supposed to be juvinalized wolves, so what if it's persistent pup behaviour?
I think dogs lick for a variety of reasons. Puppies lick their mothers mouths to get her to regurgitate her food, as seen in wolves.
Adult dogs also lick as a sensory device, (not necessarily in friendliness), to strangers, to 'check' them out.
With what I feed, what I know they clean themselves and what I know they put in their mouths.....YUK, no licking.
I hear you Carol - I draw the line at licking INSIDE my mouth (which is, for some terrifically crazy reason, Oscar's all-time FAVORITE place to lick), but I generally like his kisses (call me crazy ). I also thought I read somewhere that dog's and cats actually have cleaner mouthes than people - in part due to the large quantities of bacteria and ickies they come into contact with all the time... but I could be wrong... and I certainly don't allow face kisses directly after raw meals - EW! and certainly much more risky.
