Christi,
For a young pup like you have, several small sessions a day will work. Walks should not be too long.
I also let my pup run with "free time" as well. She has a 30ft lead on but it allowed to run and explore stuff. She crawls all over the agility equipment and the lower part of my "disaster" pile.
I do not make her do any of it, as structured "exercise" is hard on their growing joints. Puppies do a good job of "limiting" themselves to what they can and cannot do.
At about 8 or 9 months I start with a little bit of structure as far as jumping and stuff.
Also, I do not let them run and play, nor do I walk them on hard surfaces if I can avoid them.

Ah I should ammend, with the Tire Biter toys I meant "smaller" not the small size. I use the medium and large sizes. I also use the kong biscuit ball and stuff a ball and freeze a goodie mixture in them.
I WISH I could leave my dog with something like this. He's destroyed 3 large Tire Biters, all in the matter of a day, and Kongs are just laughable around Dr. Destructo. Out of necessity, my dog had to learn "settle down".
Mike S. brings up a very good point about dogs who just won't quit and will push themselves past the point that's safe.

Back when I was with my ex and we had three dogs, I'd put a chest harness on each of 'em, set up a rope system ala a dog sled rig, and sit on my bike. They'd pull, I'd ride. Four mile trot to the coffee shop (where, in addition to coffee and rolls, they had a watering bowl out front and homemade dog treats for sale.)
I'd have my coffee and scone while reading the paper, they'd each get a portion of a dog biscuit and some water, then they'd pull me home. My shepherd mix knows "Left" and "Right" directions, and the two Siberians just followed her.
Never failed to create three pooped pups. Made for some interesting looks, too.... "Sled dogs in Phoenix???"

I agree and should have mentioned that in my last post.....Ember will try things that are beyond her "capabilities" and this is stopped by me.
Jeff,
This is a really young pup we are talking about though....

I think it all comes down to the individual dog and the type of environment you create for them during "down time".
This is what I'm starting to see too.
I've gone so long thinking "I'm a horrible owner if I don't give this dog all the energy burning exercise he needs." Problem is I wasn't sure what he needed and was just going as long as he would. He's a bottomless pit.
I'm finding that how his "down time" is laid out has almost as much effect on him as how his exercise is laid out. If my wording makes any sense at all. I'm having to reset some boundaries and we do things when I want to do things.
The more I quit trying so hard the better things get. I don't really consider him a dominant dog, but he knew who was workin' for who.

Christi's is. Mine's 3.
I wanted to add, that I have absolutely no idea how you guys balance as many dogs as some of you do. Amazing.

I can't even imagine what Em's capable of these days. Bull riding, hanging off grain silos, and probably logging on to the computer after everyone's asleep.

I love having all of my dogs. Keeps me busy and out of trouble (except here )
I will say that I am looking forward to the contract dogs going home though. 6 dogs for the last year, with a BAD winter, was tough.
My hubby is feeling neglected a bit because the dogs do take up time and I am hesitant to leave for long periods when I am right in the middle of "breakthrough" training.
I think being down to 4 for a while will give me a good break. Plus, my Bloodhound is close to retirement and I need to get ready for the Shuler bloodhound that I have been coveting for two years. Hopefully he calls with a successful breeding in the next few months....
