I guess I wil jump in here as well, I have been following Ed's bite training puppies video for about 3 months, everyone is right, I trained 5-10 min for 3 times a day, that seemed to be good for my GSD, along with little playtimes in between when he was bugging me. I just started training focus at 5 1/2 months old, he seems to have changes enough to be able to focus for about 15 min really well, I think your Mal will tell you when he is ready to start focus training, listen to him. I think puppy training is done on the pups terms and time table, not ours.

In all that I forgot to address your other two questions! Sorry about that! I started training grip and drive as soon as I got him home... you can train grip by using Ed's countering method on the towel, and any rag on a string, playing keep away will help drive, every catch and counter is teaching the puppy grip focus and drive. Puppy has to focus on rag, catch rag, win rag. It's all early FUN learning!

Hi Guys, I'm new. It's my first time on the board. I have an American Pitbull Terrier. He's 6 months old now and quite smart and obedient. I'm finishing my degree in Animal Behaviour this year and I want to work with service dogs or protection dogs after I graduate. I want to train my dog up to its full potential and gain some experience from him now, so I can prepare myself for my future career. I would like to know how I could test his potential. I know a little bit about picking a personal protection pup. When I picked him, he was 5 weeks (I know it's a bit early, he turned out well though), he got very high prey drive, likes to retrieve, pretty good nerves. When should I do further testing on him? What is the difference between a good personal protection dog and a good service dog in temperament? Please help.
Welcome Felix!
It's good to see you here, I personally can't answer your question as I know nothing of temperment testing a PSD, but I am sure you will get the answer you need! Again Welcome and good luck!

First I would like to welcome you to the board. For the best response I would recommend that you focus your post to one point or question and then post a new thread in one of Ed’s categories that best fits your question. Good luck.
Out of all the responses to this thread Chuck's was the most accurate.
