My puppy won't play ball (or anything else) with me. If I throw a ball for him, he looks at me, then runs over to me and starts biting my clothes and hands.
However, he does play ball with himself. (picks up the ball and tosses it with a head jerk, then runs over and pounces on it). If I try and touch it, he will lose interest in the ball and start biting me again (play biting, not aggressive).
I won't show him the clip because he would want me to buy him one.
I just use the go frrball and launcher (which is just a little handle) that it comes with that Leerburg sells. I can get a ball out a good 40 yards with minimal effort. It's good stuff.
Looks like that doxie is owned by an engineer with w-a-a-ay to much time on his hands. I really liked the LCD status panel on the back.
A few years back, I recall seeing a similar device in the catalogs. It had a hopper for the balls and would shoot them out from there. However, instead of chasing the balls all the way from the launcher, the dogs just learned to sit out where the balls were landing and then run after them.
I built the ball machine because I thought my dog Jerry, might like it and that it would be something fun for me to build. So after two years of on and off work, with many safety features such as IR proximity sensors to protect Jerry and my son from the machine, I finally complete.
Far from being a replacement for me, I was always right there with him enjoying his fun. And with all the troubles that I went through to build the ball machine, I still end up throwing more balls than that the machine could count! According to the computer, he played with the machine by himself only 3 times in his life.
I recently put this video on YouTube to keep alive my earlier memories of him and (hopefully) provide some "humorous distractions" for anyone that might drop by.
Sounds as if the little doxy came to a too-soon end. :<

Charlie: Thank you for doing the research on the machine. I got a kick out of seeing the Doxie play with it. I was thinking in addition to those who are unable to throw the ball, this would also be great for those owned by Border Collies who never, EVER get tired of playing ball!
