Oh, yes, I forgot to mention it but like you said Alex-no more scooping the back yard! they crumble within days, so I can just procastinate and not have to. on the other hand there are some messes still there from puppies who left 5 months ago-That in itself tells that something was wrong with their diet!! its petrified, not even dung beetles wanted it. I use that selling point, that you dont really have to scoop your yard all that often...

Because of the time it takes to prepare, we used either Canidae or a commercially available raw. Then we discovered our dog has food allergies. He is now on a prescription kibble diet. We've looked for commercially available raw diets that don't have any of his allergens. Haven't had any luck.
By the way, before he was tested for allergies we got into the raw vs kibble argument with our vet. I challenged him to find the studies that support the view that raw is not healthy. The best he came up with was an article by an expert who said avoid raw because uncooked food is unsafe due to bacteria. I asked my vet how many dogs he has treated for ailments due to raw. None.

i was feeding evo, then all raw.
Now 2 of my dogs have to do one meal kibble one raw because i could not keep weight on them, no matter how much raw i fed.
the other dogs were doing great, but 2 just were dropping weight to a dangerous point.
it actually takes more time to prepare the kibble than to just do raw. Before, i would plop down some ck backs, now i have to mix in supplements, plus something wet to make it mushy/clumpy(he inhales kibble otherwise)
it's good kibble, i don't feel bad about feeding it-but i have to say, their poops after being back on kibble are HUGE! Scary.
EDIT: Rich-what is your dogs allergies? Capone is allergic to beef, all fish and grains-and i found a food for him.....what exactly is he allergic to?

I feed raw for numerous reasons which we've all posted about before but I feed kibble on long trips, for obvious reasons. I still take the salmon oil and vitamins E and C with us. Although when on a trip and I have reason to go to a grocery store, I'll pick up some raw chicken for that evening's meal for Lear.
I understand that kibble is easier, cheaper, and I do keep a small bag of good quality kibble around for the odd times that I forget to defrost raw for a meal. But I can no longer imagine feeding only kibble day after day to my dog.
When I do feed the occasional kibble meal, the poo is evidence to me that the kibble wasn't digested properly or well enough. So even though kibble companies tell you how nutritionally great their particular kibble is, I doubt that the dog is getting much of the benefit. It's more like fibrous filler food - satisfies the stomach but I have serious doubts about the nutritional value. Kind of like a fast food burger. Looks like it's all there, but is it...

I do kibble in the morning and raw at night.
2 cups of Kibble in the morning gets mixed with salmon oil, raw egg, warm water and yogurt.
At night it is lamb bone, turkey necks, chicken thighs, deer, or chop meat
Her poop always breaks up in a few days. So I guess I have the best of both worlds. Ease, cost, and clean up.

You know Alex, I think that people who mention the cost as to why they don't feed raw are comparing it to cheaper foods. Nothing I feed costs as much per pound as the "premium foods" I was feeding. I know that my big hold up on it was the old balanced diet ploy. The more I read, especially here, made me realize how simple it is. It's more work but I enjoy it and he loves it.

Up until recently I was feeding kibble in the morning and raw at night. I guess I was doing it because it seemed easier when I was getting ready for work in the morning to feed kibble. But the last time their kibble ran low I looked at those crunchy chunks and I just made up my mind that I was going all raw and if it takes longer I will just get up 10 minutes earlier to make it. I'm glad I did, there poops are white and crumbly (yeah!) and they look and seem very healthy. I'm just having a hard time remembering to take enough meat out to thaw since their eating it morning and night now but I'll get it figured out. Also, my goal is to get my older shep off rimadyl and I think feeding all raw will help with this. Lucky you Jeff if you get crumbly poop feeding kibble and raw, that never happened for me!!

What kind of Kibble? I use Blue Wilderness.
But next time I will be looking for something a bit less expensive.

Mallory,
He is allergic to:
Chicken
Turkey
Eggs
Corn
Rice
Flax (flax is in a LOT of the commercial foods)
Barley
Alfalfa
Carrots
Soybean (borderline)
He has a prescription for Hills z/d. That's what we feed him.
He also has a number of environmental allergies. He takes shots for those. The shots appear to be very effective, he doesn't break out anymore.
I'll also include this in a PM to you.

Jeff, I fed them Diamond Natural which there probably isn't anything "natural" about it but in a town of 10,000 there's not much of a selection of anything . So maybe that is why my dogs poops werent like raw food poops
